Air plane jigs
« on: Feb 06, 2007, 02:38 PM »
Ive tried these a couple times this year for Lake Trout but haven't caught any on them. To be fair though I haven't caught many on anything so far this year. What is the best technique for these jigs? Fast rise and drop? Slow rise and slow controlled fall? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Just like a jigging Rapala: fast rise and drop, then wait...repeat. They swing out and then circle on the pause. Throw in a jiggle now and then during the pause. Tip it with a minnow or a few maggots or meal worms.

The guys in BC and up here use them quite a bit with a fair success rate. As the season progresses you see a bit more success with them as the days get longer. You may also want to try some bait or some attractant on the lure if that is legal where you are fishing. Northland Tackle sells them and they may have some info on their site about using the airplane successfully.

Tight lines and hang in there.

If it's the new style just read what Webguy wrote. If I get a chance I'll post a pic of the new and old style tonight.

I tried mine on sunday, but I think the vex is the key, I was just jerking it up and down and had a fish swim in, I just  brought it up and had a strike, but it seems like when I have had a strike it is one hit then the fish leaves, not like a minnow. they work for perch
