First ice attempt #1
« on: Dec 16, 2017, 04:23 AM »
Heading out to Acme Dam (westmoreland county) it  is rather small and mostly shallow.  Rangerphil posted a couple pictures on th 10th of it mostly capped over.  I checked mammoth lake (much lower in elevation) yesterday and the ice was 2.75 inches.   I hope we are good to go this morning. I am trying out some new gear and I really pumped.  I am switching from the Showdown to the LX5I.  I also picked up a Rigid Gen5x hammer drill and adapter for my 6" mora.   I hope this is not a failed attempt but will play it safe.  If the ice is not ready I will stay off....  Sorry for the long rant but I have been watching ice fishing videos of guys fishing out west since the 2nd week of Nov and it has been driving me crazy.

That is some shady looking ice there CrappieHunter. 3" at best I'd say.
Nice catch though. I tried my cousin's pond yesterday with no luck. It's only a small pond with a few bass and just blue gills otherwise.

I am terrible at measurements too, except that it is usually the big fish get bigger and barely legal fish get a lil smaller

That’s why I use a large single hook gaff. Measure from tip of hook up the handle with a tape measure and mark with a sharpie every inch. Circle 4”. Then when you measure, stick in hole and hook tip of gaff under ice and measure thickness. No guessing.

Just wanted to say I'm jelious that you where on the ice today I was hoping to do the same I checked St Vincent and keystone with very little success did see a 3 people skiing at keystone checked the ice  where they where and barely had 2.5 inches  did find a spot on the back side of the lake that has 3inches  got called into work so there went that idea thinking about going out this tonight after work but have never ice fished at night and don't know how it would be

That works!

I like the gaff because I only need to make a small hole with the spudbar.

Crappiehunter, Dave and I discovered if you wear your PT belt on the ice you should be safe.  I hope you were wearing your PT belt?
