Winter finally here???
« on: Jan 11, 2012, 10:53 AM »
Well looking at the next few day forcast for North Iowa it looks like me might finally be getting some good weather... Of course the 2 inch of snow we're spos to get tonight won't help much but at least it will be getting cold! If we're lucky maybe we'll have this weather through the end of April and make all those normal people mad  ;D

Don't worry about the snow, it should blow right off with the 45 mph wind there talking. I just hope the wind doesent destroy what ice i have right now!!

We have thin, rotten, useless ice on some ponds around Iowa City, so I am hoping the snow is light enough to just blow off the ice here. Two or three inches of snow on top of rotten ice will not do us any good.

The predicted snowfall totals for Iowa City have edged up in the last couple hours, from 1"-3" to 2"-4".

That doesn't matter if it is light snow and the wind blows it off what rotten skim ice we have. If most of the snow stays on that bad ice we have a problem.

The wind is a killer for everyone! Its to bad the wind chill doesn't make the ice freeze faster!!! On another note, its probably good that the permys aren't out yet... half of them could be blowing around the lake right now ;)

pretty bummed, been checking a local farm pond for weeks and it was still iced over yesterday. that wind last night has that thing 50% open again, i couldnt believe my eyes this morning. thought for sure it would be well on its way to fishable.

Its just a bad year took a trip up to northern Minnesota and seen tons of open water on the way up there on lakes that should have 25+ inches of ice on them.  Artic oscillation is sticking it to us and the sad thing is that pattern can persist for multiple years.  That being said we could be in for multiple dissapointing winters.   :-\

Correct me if I'm wrong. But if the water temp is 28, wouldn't it be ice ::)

This wind is killing me! We'd have 4 inches of good ice by now if it weren't so darn windy! And the ice we do have is some nasty ice. Anyone know what it's like up at Bacon Creek? might have to stop by and try my luck for trout.

Key word.... WAS....Wind is the worst thing for ice, add poor ice to that and you get open water after 48 hours of over 30 mph winds....
