Overnight low was 31F ...had a brief snow shower last night . Its getting there folks . It was kind of fitting as I was helping my buddy put together his Eskimo 2600 thermal in the daylight hours ...that is a nice shelter .. lots of room and the assembly was pretty straight forward ..the trim lock still needs to be installed. Tested the Power Practical LED 10' color strip with a Dewalt battery and USB adapter...worked well and very bright .

I’ve been using the Eskimo 2600 for a few years.  It’s an awesome shelter.  Stays warm. Seats are comfortable for long days

Good luck with the smoke pole. I’m headed out tomorrow, and will finish off the season before I start checking ice.

It’s been a very slow year, we think that EHD took its toll on the population here.  We just are not seeing any deer.

Greetings may everyone's Christmas or Chanukah have been good ones. I'm not sure how long what ice we have on lakes and ponds will last given the current warm spell.

Hardwater diehard thank you for the information on the Swan Lake fire dept. ice fishing contest you saved me from writing a letter to contact person I have for that contest. I believe you are correct and Liberty(NY.) Agway does sell bait for fishing. Monticello Home and Garden on route 17B about one mile past the raceway heading towards White Lake also sells bait for fishing. Unless the store set up has changed the sporting goods area is located at rear of the store.

Good fishing wished to everyone keep safe on the recently formed ice.

Hardwater diehard glad you were able to get out and fish while lakes by you had ice. thanks for the information on bait shop in White lake.

I do not believe any lakes are open for ice fishing at this time. but for everyone's knowledge here are phone numbers for Bear Mountain,Harriman,Rockland Lake and Sterling Forest state parks.

  Bear Mountain  (845)-786-2701
  Tiorotti beach (Harriman)  (845)-429-8257
  Rockland lake (845)-268-3020
  Sterling Forest (8450-351-5907

I strongly suggest calling before traveling to any of these parks especially if driving for one hour or more to reach them. Remember only certain lakes in Harriman and Sterling Forest are open to ice fishing. The agency which manages these parks requires a minimum of 6 inches of ice over majority of a lake before opening it to ice fishing. There are signs Red lake closed ,Green lake is open .

Hope this is of some help to folks.

Welcome Brent, I'll dedicate Blow Away to you next time on on the ice jamming and jigging. Liberty Agway has all sizes when available. A lot of the stores do good, but they seem to go the extra mile on the bait fish. Fathead to jumbo. They carry grubs, mousies etc. It's tough for the stores in general to handle that first ice around here any more. The forecast as such they would hold on to a lot of bait. If you're headed past liberty on 17 west Fur Fin And Feather is some real good people with good bait as well in Livingston Manor.

Brent,I believe you now have enough post to see and use the reports and Conditions forum for New York. there is a topic titled Sullivan county small waters just check dates of posts to make sure they a recent. Also think you can now use the personal/private message feature here on Ice shanty.

Hopefully we see a change in temperatures soon so ice starts building on area lakes and ponds.

Subway4x4 once you have logged-in under where it will say Welcome Subway4x4 look for the word forum in a line with other words. if you click on forum takes you to a page listing all of the forums/boards here on Ice Shanty  . Scroll down the page look for New York Reports and Conditions click on it currently the topic Sullivan County small waters is on page 3 of the 4 pages . Last post was made by Yotecatcher on Jan.22,2022.

I hope this has helped you and others find the reports and conditions if you are not logged-in you will not see this listed on page with all of the forums for logged-in members only. I maybe wrong on this post total but believe new members need to make 3 posts before being able to view these forums and use the personal/private message feature on this website.

I buy my jigging bait in bulk before the ice hits, and now every time I open the refrigerator door, all my bait - meal worms and spikes….maggots are sitting there just waiting to be used.

My bait is soooo lonely, oh so lonely..

If anyone knows any weather men or women, could you ask them to deliver freezing temperatures to Dutchess and Putnam counties?   It’s not for me, it’s for my bait.    They are soooo loooonnely.

Oh, and my wife isn’t all too happy looking at plastic bags full of maggots next to her cooking….   😇

My personal choice not to use Face Book so will ask here has anyone heard anything about the Mahogany Ridge hunting & fishing club contest that is held on Highland Lake in Sullivan county usually  on the Saturday of Presidents weekend in February .

Use caution if attempting to fish this weekend.

I see the cost for mahogany Ridge contest went up 5 dollars till a good deal with the pig roast. Now hopefully nature cooperates and we get a period of cold weather with littl/no snow to build up the ice on local lakes and ponds.

Speakeasy welcome to the sport of ice fishing and the Ice Shanty website. you have found a great source for information on the sport. Just a suggestion for you the smaller  usually shallower lakes/ponds freeze/ice over first and are a better bet at finding ice that will support your weight and that of your gear and any partners. Outside of Livingston manor in Sullivan county there is Lake Wameta. Do a search to find the phone number for FIn,Fur and Feathers sport shop in Livingston manor they may have some info. about ice conditions on this body of water. Generally speaking 4 inches of Black/Clear ice is considered "Safe" for ice fishing. Rember there is no truly "Safe" ice and the ice cover on a lake is not a uniform thickness in some cases it can change in the mater of a few feet. Believe you need two more posts and then when you are logged-in and click on the word Forum it will take you to a listing of all the forum/boards on this website scroll down looking for New York Reports & conditions go through the pages and look for Sullivan county small waters. check that topic for any recent reports. REMEBER TO CHECK DATES ON POSTS . Go with a partner /buddy since all of this is new to you. there are several videos on ice safety on You Tube suggest you watch a couple. All the best to you this season and as you venture into this new for you sport.

My computer skills do not match hardwater diehard's but for everyone's knowledge information on the king of the Ice contest held on White Lake can be found at the link below . look fo king of the ice to get contest info.

Hey look at that a new thread! So fished on 12/28 (about a month ago) found 9" shockingly here in Orange County caught one perch right when I got there. Didn't catch much else because I had to leave earlier than I would've liked. Haven't been back since to see how it held up to the rain and warm temps been too busy taking care of all my off season projects for next years deer season.... might check it out later this week when the cold returns until then have a couple more things to finish up in the woods... This year has been the least amount of ice fishing I've done by far due to lack of ice.

Good evening, Loudmouth879 nice to see a post from you hopefully we see a stretch of colder weather with no snow so area lakes/ponds build inches of ice and we all can get out to fish.
Miles59 I need to do some searching but believe like many of the lakes in Sullivan county Tennannah is privately owned so no public access . Many communities in the county have home/property owner and lake associations so unless you own property/home in a community can not use the lake unless the association rules allow home/property owners to have guests fish with them. I know of one lake where visitors have to place a sticker on the dash board of their vehicles and wear a tag while fishing.
Hardwater diehard thank's once more for posting info. and links to king of the Ice contest.

Miles59 , you are welcome as i mentioned to member Speakeasy search for the phone number and call the Fin,Fur and Feathers sport shop in Livingston Manor and see what they can tell you about ice conditions on Lake Wameta  and Monguap pond. I believe the shop will open around 9AM tomorrow inquire about their hours the couple that own the shop are both in their seventies. They do not do much early morning business during the week so open at 9Am or later Monday through Friday. I suggest that you or anyone planning to get bait there call before making your trip to be sure they are open. the Agway store in liberty sells live bait not sure of their hours . Lake Wameta contains pickerel and pan fish,Monguap Pond I believe also contains trout besides the pickerel and pan fish.

Steve - I called both shops yesterday.  Fur Fin & feather is closed Monday and Tuesday, then open 9 to 5 Wednesday through Sunday.  They have minnows and wax worms, but the guy said nobody has been in for minnows yet.  He couldn't report on ice conditions because he hasn't had people buying bait.  The place was for sale for a long time, and not sure if the same couple still owns it.  I'll stop by this week on my way to Andes.

I also called Agway in Liberty.  They open at 8 AM and they are stocked with minnows and assorted grubs.

Mongaup is on my "new lake to try" agenda, so I hope to see how it goes there.

Don't forget Lake Huntington...Lake Superior ..

Monticello Lawn and Garden..(845) 794-6457...has bait believe large minnows only I would call first

this guy sells bait as well definitely  call first

Note the bait regulations in the DEC manual ...can get tricky between Mongaups

Miles59, thank you for the information. Rich and Sue Post  were the owners of Fin,Fur and Feathers nice couple but like i posted older can see them selling and enjoying life.

I did a little on-line bait tackle shop searching for Sullivan County. Sadly I see Sport-Nuts in Rock Hill has closed. I do not know how much snow this current storm is forecasted to deposit in Sullivan County but any snow will hide ice from view and may slow ice building so use your spud and have ice picks ready for use hopefully no one will need the picks. Good fishing to everyone.

Long time ...hope all is well. My local lake did freeze up enough for me to get out late December for 3 times other folks also squeezed a day or two more .Rumors are Lake Superior has some ice and folks have been on it ...but I have no conformation . Snowing here now ..probably get the 6-8 in that they predicted... the snow should help with the radiant heat and allow the shore access to freeze up once this cold weather settle in starting Tuesday night through the first week in February...Smaller bodies of waters north of me should lock up as well .

Deweyicefish nice to see a post from you ,if you look at top of page 3 of this thread member Miles59 replied to some suggestions I gave him this past Sunday he called Fin Fur and Feathers sport shop in Livingston Manor person he talked with said he could not give a n ice conditions report for Mongaup pond or Wameta lake as he had not sold any minnow or other live bait recently so he assumed the ice on both places was not in good condition. I agree with hardwater diehard's statement snow cover on ground should help reduce the radiant heat from ground being released into lake water and give better shorelines. But conversely the snow cover on any ice formed will insulate it and slow ice formation. So use caution and your knowledge from years of ice fishing to decide if you want to make the drive to Sullivan county's northern parts to try and fish.

If anyone was planning to attended this Sunday's Jan.29TH Swan Lake fire dept. contest i believe they have a Face Book page where you might find out if the contest has been rescheduled or cancelled due to unsafe ice conditions. sorry but at his time i choose not to be involved with Face Book .

Hello Guys              I was able to make it out on Superior today  :icefish: I had a hard time . The shore line was breaking up & unable to get out 1 location.  I saw another man fishing . I then went down by boat launch…. Boat launch had open water but there was a spot to get on the ice…I saw other holes from guys fishing like DieHard said …  the ice was about 5” but not the best ice .. I managed to get a bunch of Dinks & a few small pickerel … my 1st time out a good day…  Stay on top….  ;) :icefish: :icefish:

Good evening, Miles59 thank you for the update on Swan Lake fire dept. contest,
Deweyfish thank you for the report on lake Superior. Congratulations on getting out.

Checking a couple weather reports foecast saying 1 to 5 inches of snow in Orange county and 5 to 9 inches in Sullivan counties from the coming storm. So not the best for ice fishing this weekend and going foreward this season.

Fished Mongaup Pond first time ever yesterday. The boat launch was very sketchy, but easy access to solid ice 50’ to the right. I measured between 4”-5” depending on where I drilled. Caught one small pickerel that was it.

Fur Fin and Feather has a new owner. They have live bait and plenty of gear, so try and give them the business. There is a tribute to the original owners posted in the store. Rich passed on, not sure when.

Miles59,thank you for the reply Mongaup Pond is one of the few state owned areas in Sullivan county you can ride a snowmobile so at times road to boat launch is not plowed.

I also was looking at The DEC's website for everyone's knowledge the use of bait fish is prohibited at Mongaup Pond website did not state if this was live fish only and dead preserved as permissible . So best to avoid bait fish and a possible ticket if Econ officers are patrolling the pond on the day you choose to fish.

Subway4x4 best to you at the Lake Superior contest. Besides Super Nova selling bait at the contest Monticello Home and Garden on route 17B has live bait , Look up this page (3) to see Hardwater diehard's post with contact info. for this business.
Does anyone know if this is a new contest my first time hearing of an ice fishing contest at Lake Superior.

Friendly reminder the Loch Sheldrake Fire dept. contest is also this coming Saturday Feb, 4TH . GO to page 2 of this thread and look for Hardwater Diehard's post with notice of this contest ,King of the Ice and the Swan Lake contest which was scheduled for today (Jan. 29) but was cancelled for this year.

If the weather forecasters are correct we will finally see some days with a high temp at 32 or lower this week so some ice will be made finally. Good fishing to all be careful as some lakes/ponds may recently have frozen over and have thin ice.

Also I have been going to Fur Fin and Feather since it was across the street! It's a long time. I watched them grow their family and business and  be the best of people in the community from afar. From my humble perspective the new owners seem to be of that same quality. When you purchase at a local sport shop it comes with local knowledge.

Over night low 16F...temperature  did not get above freezing all day yesterday . Gonna be a mixed bag for fishable ice this weekend. The smaller bow with no wind exposure seemed to faired better while other larger bow have had difficulty maintaining/making ice due mostly to wind/sun . North of me probably faired much better .

I haven’t gone ice fishing yet!

I’m bored so I’m reintroducing myself.

Chris Pooley, who started this thread, helped me through my noobness. He even gave an ice fishing class with the crew in my garage a few years ago.

If you see my gear, it looks like I’ve been doing this for decades. Nope. This year will be  season three.  For those who don’t know me, I tend to go into things 110%

An Otter X-over Pro Cottage insulated flip-over keeps me warm. The roto-molded sled is set on top of my DIY Smitty. I pull it handsfree with a ski pulk body harness and 6 foot fiberglass poles.

I carry all my rods (7+2 spare) and tackle in a Flambeau Rod case. 8” Eskimo Pistol bit auger partnered with a Dewalt 998 brushless drill with 9 AHr batteries cuts holes easily. A Dewalt DXH12B portable propane heater with Flame King refillable one pound tanks or 5 lb bulk tank provide heat. It has a fan, LED lights and USB ports. The heater stays in the truck as a backup or for a future overnight ice camping event that I haven’t done yet. Late last season, I acquired a small 10-15k BTU heater cooker combo in an effort to reduce drag weight. I love it!

For now, I’ve always felt comfortable with my Stryker Ice Climate insulated flotation suit. ActionHeat 5v heated vest, baselayer pants, socks and hand muff keeps me very comfortable.

I initially started with 6 iFish Pro’s. Now I exclusively use 7 Jawjackers, 3 which have the jigging bases. I just enjoy fighting a fish with ultra light rods and light line.

This season I’ll hand out iFish Pro’s to my fishing buddies who want to try it when we go out… they can carry all that bulk on the ice :) My Jawjackers/Jigging bases all fit in one bucket.

The Lakco ripple pucks work beautifully. No issues the past couple years. I cut/filed off the plastic eyelet because it gets tangled with the fishing line. I just ordered 4 more. If hole icing is not an issue, I just use a foam hole cover.

I also use the bobber delay setup that Automatic Fisherman pioneered. It allows the fish to get more of the bait in their mouth before setting the hook.

I use a Garmin 93SV+, LVS32, GLS10, 30AHr Amped LiFePO4 installed into a Summit shuttle and Fishing Specialties downrod. This system coupled with Aqua-Vu micro 5.0 camera helps me locate underwater structure, weed lines and fish.  The hard part is catching those damn fish. I’m getting better, but still have a lot to learn.

Shuttle and 7.5 Qt bait cooler with a rechargeable aerator is pulled by my DIY Rubbermaid plastic bin mini hole hopper. I think it’s my greatest invention for ice fishing. Holds 6 rods, baitfish net and an ice scoop.

For safety on the ice,  I carry a whistle, retractable ice picks, 50 foot rescue throw rope, quick release knife, first aid kit.

The truck is a different story. Spare tools, shovels, ropes, chains, winch, recovery gear, spare clothes, 12v heated blanket, advanced first aid, food, water.

I fish for the experience; for the fun of it; for the company.
I’m lucky that my best friend, my lovely wife, supports me in all my endeavors. She knows that I always go all-in whenever I start something new and actually makes sure I’m budgeted for my shenanigans. If not, I’d be in the poorhouse right now.

Here is my fishing day, which includes derbies and contests:
Drill holes, setup my jackers, attach my Vulture transmitter sensors, deploy my flip-over. Wander around the lake with hot coffee in hand, to say hi to friends and strangers. Make lunch and enjoying food with friends. Sometimes I even get strangers to join us.

The bonus of my day:

Subway, nice rundown of gear! I Hope you get out there soon dude! Time is not on our side looking at the weather. There’s ice!
Where ya from, mind I ask? Any friend of pooley is a friend of us all here.

I’ve become the total gear minimalist over the years. I do like the jawjackers but they’re a little bulky so they stay home.  I’m down to 2 or 3 beaver dams, a small custom styrofoam shiner cooler,  vexilar/case/glow cup, two custom jig rods, bait puck/spikes, small jig box, 5” mora and katoolas on my feet.
I hang the vex on the mora handle over my shoulder. My backpack holds the rest. 1 hand holds the bait and away I walk. This gets me away from any crowds pullin lots of weight.
I’m a wonderer rather than a camper on the ice. Id rather move around the lake until I find the active fish. Then I’ll set up the tip ups. It’s a strategy that works well for me.

Hi flounderman,

I’ve known Chris Pooley for years. He kept my race bike in tip top form when I did triathlons and long distance bike rides.  I never knew he was an ice fishing fanatic until he found out I was interested in it a few years ago.  I pulled together a group of dudes that were also noobs and he showed us his gear and how he used it.

We’ve been ice fishing together the past two years until he ran off with a girl far north, spitting distance from Canada. 😂

I guess I’m glad he’s found his great life. That was our loss here in Rockland.

But damn, always gotta be a girl that messes up the crew.  Lolololol

So does everyone. Went from 0 to Zoo ever since Gab-alot posted and Blabbed about it some years ago.
First weekend after that particular post I went to check out the damage and counted 27 trucks! Any day including weekends prior I’d be surprised to see one. Thanks again. I still see people never learn.

Nice bass but you were risking a ticket not immediately releasing it as according to dec regs lol

Actually according to the DEC Regs from Dec. 1st to June. 14th it's a catch and release season and if you read the definitions it says

Catch and Release

Measuring, weighing, and photographing the fish are permitted as long as the fish is not removed from the water for an extended period or handled in a manner that could cause harm.

The fish was entered in a nationwide bass monthly tournament which requires catch, pic and release. I follow all DEC regulations. It was released safe and sound. I’ve never kept a largemouth or smallmouth ever.

I always take a release video in case it’s questioned. I just don’t know how to upload a video on ice shanty

But here are the screenshot still pics from the video release.

I was participating in an ice fishing contest.

All five of those fish were caught within 20 minutes of each other.

The pickerel were kept alive until I got wind of the longest length of pickerel submitted for the ice contest. Then they were safely released since I was nowhere close to longest fish. The largie was kept for 90 seconds and released. The bullhead was brought to weigh-in and missed podium. My bud took it home for dinner.

Is there a better way to do this in a derby? Enlighten me please.

I was hoping that this site would be more interactive and everyone would enjoy sharing experiences about something that everyone is passionate about. I’m willing to learn new things and also willing to share things that I’ve learned.

Yesterday, I was at Lake Superior and someone actually recognized my truck and asked me if I was “the guy that posted the big bass on Ice Shanty.” I was pleased as punch that this site actually has folks that read my stuff.

What a great community of anglers!

Lloyd

Thanks for the guidance. I will keep that in mind.

My question: How do I handle pickerel (and other fish) that would have to wait until  later in the day for the ice contest weigh-in/measuring?

I released my fish, but would’ve kept the largest for contest measuring if I knew it had a chance to podium.

Learn to chew your food and they are no problem I just fillet like any other fish after cooking just use a couple forks to put meat out from center exposing them I also don't bread them anymore I just put butter and a little crisco and season with blackened fish seasoning fast no multi bowls to clean up and cook faster than breaded also if you keep the ones just legal size and cook well done the bones just about disintegrate

How about baking?
Thinking dont even scale, just gut and leave whole.
Foil lined baking sheet with elevated rack in it.
Place fish belly up on rack supported on sides by boiled potatoes.
Season inside body cavity and add some butter.
Bake with high heat, fast and hot.
Skin should fall away and meat flake away from bones with fork.
Cooking whole with bones and skin intact adds flavor.

I know a handful of guys that leave the Y bone in and send the fillets threw the food processor. Mix the meat in with bread crumbs seasoning and maybe a little mayo I think and make patties or roll balls out of it then grill or deep fry. Had them both ways and their actually really good! Can’t tell at all there is a bone in it. Myself they go right back down the hole only because I don’t have the heart to leave them on the ice

Are you actually pickling them for 5 days and then freezing them ..and then cooking them ? I would think freezing them may make them mushy ...unless cooking them is the secret

Pickled and patties are your best bets for pickerel adding shrimp to the grind is not a bad idea  . But larger pickerel are your best bet for fillets ...several processes can be found on YouTube.

Pickerel fish cakes and pickled pickerel are both delicious and an easy way  to avoid the fine bones. If the season isn't bad enough I broke my ankle last week. I still enjoy the site. But probably won't see any more  fishing  this season.

Greetings, Beachwoods 16 sorry to hear about your ankle best wished for you with it healing properly .
Gamalot is doing well exchanged a few personal messages with him last week needed some of his knowledge on Sullivan County.
Subway4x4 there is a Hardwater Cuisine forum/board here on Ice Shanty maybe a few recipes for pickerel among the pages. You Tube should have a few videos on how to fillet Northern pike and remove the Y-bones just apply this to pickerel.

Good fishing wished to all planning a trip this week. Be careful and use your spud.

Glad you enjoy them - they are not for me .....I have no desire to go thru that for fish.  I agree the meat is tasty when you finally get to it bone free, but .....I also know the eagles and seas gulls and crows and coyotes love them.  I don't like catching them, I don't like unhooking them, I don't like losing lures to them, and I don't like all the slime !   ;D ;D

You should eat the pickerel they are as good as anything out there if you are fishing a derby just bring a cooler and put water in it easy enough
Or drill out an ice livewell, clam also makes a fish bag that can stick in the hole ignorance is bliss simple YouTube or google search does wonders if you really want to learn there’s plenty of options this board being one

Or ask questions on a site like this. Isn’t this what it’s for?

Those fish were put back in the ice hole for a brief period after they were caught. Is that a no-no? They were very much alive when I released them.

This is a first.  Being called ignorant on a public forum where questions are supposedly encouraged.

Is there a rule on this board that you have to blur out backgrounds on posted pics? Or is this just something that you decided on your own?

I certainly don’t want to break any board rules.

No rules - its just a matter of that spot being burned, which has happened many times to many people because of innocent posts ..... that mainly affects small bodies of water that get fished out IMO though.

I bought it in the ice fishing package and never used it because I had no ice. Im waiting for a network extension cable to adapt it to the kayak.  It will be delivered tomorrow.

I have an older Revo13 that doesnt have a flat spot to strap it down, so Im rigging it up differently.   Yes your suggestions helped, thank you

Im on the river when the run starts, till then Im chasing panfish on my local lakes.  I launch out of Norri Point.  We should 'hook up'.

Local to the river....while it may not be a rule, doing such a thing with that resource is in poor taste and 1000% creates additional pressure on a stock of fish we'd love to see spawn successfully in the spring.  Good news is, there are folks lobbying right now to shut that fishery down nearing the spawning time. So many out of staters come to harass those fish to "create content" nothing like pimping out mother nature for views/cash.

I go out on thin ice but spud, ice picks and even will wear a live preserver at times. People can get comfortable. With two people some distance and a rope is good. All that said there are maybe two or three places in Sullivan co with safe ice right now.

Well the 2023/2024 season is slowly approaching ..I figured I dust off the SENY thread. I purchased a 650xd in the spring and was able to christen it over the weekend on land of course . Had 6 people with various opinions seated inside ...set up for mock fishing layout some libations and good input ...but still have not landed on a seating/fishing layout . The full door is going to be quite the game changer .

Cheers 🍻to a great and prosperous upcoming season.

Hello fellow southeastern NY. Ice Anglers may everyone behaving a good Holiday season . Best wishes to all for a Happy 2024.

This news will effect some more then others weather permitting on the weekends of Jan.6-7 and Jan.13-14 there will be lane closures on the NYS Thruway between the Newburgh (exit 17 and New Paltz (exit18).  Starting at 7PM on the sixth north bound lanes will be closed until 7 AM on Sunday the seventh Once the lanes reopen traffic will be limited to one lane in construction area. The following weekend the south bound lanes for this section of the Thruway will be closed from 7 PM on Saturday the thirteenth until 7AM on Sunday the fourteenth . Repair work is need to the Brookside road overpass it has been struck 27 times since 2019 by vehicles over the height clearance for the overpass. the last incident was this past October. Inspection has found the overpass to be in need of major repair. Signs alerting motorists to the closures will go up on Jan. 2ND on the Thruway and roads the will be used to detour traffic around this section of the Thruway. i got this information from the Daily Freeman's website (Kingston ,Ny. area daily newspaper) the planed detour route has motorists using Interstate 84 then getting onto route 9W north bound and one in the Highland area of Town of Llyod taking route 299 west to Thruway exit in New Paltz to get back on it to continue traveling North. I assume they will do the reverse when the South bound lanes are closed.

I'm keeping a positive attitude that we will have some type of ice fishing season this January through march of 2024.

  Steve

Miles59,
I have a cabin on the lake Tennanah runs in to. Both are private and you will get chased off. When I was a kid, we used to fish it with locals and have them on our lake as well. Over the years, a lot of owners changed and more $ is being invested for stocking, weeds, Lillie’s, etc. it has become very difficult to fish for awhile now. I get my hump busted all the time on my lake and my family has been there for 60 years….

Wind blowen chunks , some snow & slush … I was measuring 5” 3” of black & 2”
Slush ice was firm …. Where I was fishing. By the time I left with the rain things were
Getting sloppy.   With the rain I doubt the ice will be safe much longer ..Sux 🌧️

Not always true. I know a guy that’s fishing south of morningside this weekend. Lot of variables in what will hold ice and what won’t. Elevations and run off is a biggie. By me some places have lots of ice and others have none. Not condoning anything and know very little about conditions down that way…..just saying. To each their own. There is inherit danger no mater how you decide to fish this time of year

Hello good to read some of you have got out fishing locally this season.
Greensider congratulations on catching the pickerel. Things can get confusing there is also a Round Lake in the Monroe,NY. area of Orange county.
Miles-59 in case you did not see this at the bottom of page 8 of this thread there is a post from member Don E Ice with information about Tennanah Lake in the Roscoe, NY. area. A late response to your questions on this body of water.

To all heading out tomorrow be careful and may you find ice you are comfortable fishing on and have a good day.

Greensider ,you are welcome understand your feelings. There are a few lakes/bodies of water with the same or similar names in New York state. Near lake Superior in the Town of Bethel ,NY. therein a privately owned lake named Black lake I know there is also a Black Lake somewhere in upstate NY.

Subway4x4 thankyou for the update on the Hurleyville FD contest . Did you think to pass this information onto Moderator Raquettedacker so he can update the Contests/Derbys thread found near top of the NY. General forum/board.
Also please check your personal message in-box sent you some information on the Hurleyville and Lake Superior contests.

Morningside this afternoon. 2 1/2 — 3”. Shoreline weak, one boot went through not over boot height. I’ve fished ice of that thickness alot with full confidence. This ice not, felt it was borderline. Didn’t go far at all or stay long. The feel and sound while walking or drilling just wasn’t right. A couple pale sickly looking perch and I was out of there. 🍻

Good evening Jiignut thank you for the report on ice conditions at Morningside and the photo of the lake.  Jghunter best to you and everyone else who maybe in your party at the Lake Superior contest . Given the higher entry fee as compared to other area contest the organizers expect a smaller crowd then what turns out for King of the Ice and current ice conditions will be good for whatever number of people enter the contest. May this assumption be correct and everyone stay on top of the ice.

A friendly reminder the Mahogany Ridge hunting and fishing club contest and pig roast is scheduled for Saturday feb.17 TH. If the lake is not safe to ice fish they still hold the pig roast. SO if you like roast pork and at least want to discuss ice fishing with other people this event maybe for you. Information on this contest can be found in the Derbys/tournaments thread maintained by moderator Raqueetdacker and found near the top of the NY. General Forum.. Also if you go to page (7) of this thread in a post by Hardwater diehard you will find info. on this contest.

Best wished to all planning to fish this weekend may you have safe travel and good day/days on the ice.

   Steve

The river was beautiful. Moving at a good clip but we managed a few Saturday and got off right before the storm.  Not used to boat fishing the river anymore.  Should have put gas motor on! One Keeper yesterday from shore. Even with the colder temps, the snow is going to make things that much more dangerous with what little ice is left.  It's hard to take When you can remember the days of ice fishing during deer season if your tags where filled!

Well nobody fell in lake Superior lol. Ice was about 3 1/2" down to 2 1/2" by day end. I left a little early thought edges would be done but not bad. U could feel ice flex a little and waves in the holes. I got about 7 perch biggest 11" 5 bluegill one bass and one pickerel fishing right of ramp. I left a hour early 23" pickerel was winning and about a 13" perch and a huge crappie around 15".  Not sure of final results. Maybe 50 guys on ice. .they took some chance having that contest but all worked out.

Jghunter thank you for the report from the Lake Superior contest . Looks like i was correct about there being a low number of entrants realize this Winter's warmer weather also kept people away from the lake.
Glad you attended and got into some fish.

Thank you Steve.

I was thinking of going to the show this year, is anyone else going?   Maybe we could all meet up around noon one day and introduce ourselves to each other.    I remember when we used to meet a Gander Mtn for an ice fishing seminar a few years ago.

Is anyone interested?

Kb you are welcome. It has been a couple decades since I attended this show. In the past couple of years I've developed some health issues so avoid larger crowds if I were to go it would probably be on Thursday or early Friday afternoons. Besides the link Hardwater diehard provide if you use the link to Stony Clove rod and gun club's website I provide in my last post and look under events you will find a 2 dollars discount coupon for the show admission.

I also mis the preseason meeting we used to have at Gander Mountain in Middletown. Hardwater diehard can correct me if this is wrong but we would be lucky to find a similar situation as to my knowledge Gander Mountain never charged a fee for use of the lodge room or asked for him to get event insurance. Since the last preseason meeting I have searched for a place to hold another one everything I've found has a rental fee and most want you to have insurance.

Possibly next winter we could have a gathering somewhere to ice fish as a group.

Kb ,I agree it would be nice to meet other ice shanty members and put faces to screen names. Int the past there were a few group outings held at Lake Huntington in western Sullivan county. This lake has a state access spot but limited vehicle parking. A couple lakes in Harriman state park have good sized parking lots down side is the agency that operates the park requires 6 inches of ice over majority of ice surface before they will open a lake to ice fishing and they only allow ice fishing on a few lakes. Given our mild Winters the past few years run the chance of having no or only smaller lakes open for fishing.
We could meet up at one of the contest in the area.

New to Southern NY and new to ice fishing. Wanted to say hello! Will be following this thread. Looking forward to getting out there this winter.

Welcome to the board.  There is a lot of knowledge to learn from here, Its been tough lately as the ice has been limited these past few years and the board slows when the weather warms.  There is a sister site that many of us move to for open water season: http://www.myfishfinder.com

Dont be afraid to ask questions, we were all new once.
