minnows and garlic salt
« on: Jan 20, 2008, 12:40 PM »
This may have been discussed before but I haven't seen it.Since fishing lures come garlic scented has anyone tried salting minnows with garlic salt?I'm going to try it with some of the next dead minnows that I get.I would be interested to hear if anybody has tried it or anything like it.
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

I put salt in with my minnows all the time toughens them up and adds scent.

I have done it a bit, but haven't seen much of a difference in success rate.  You can also put a tiny bit of garlic powder in with waxies and leave them in the fridge for a night.  If you don't catch fish on them, they go great on pasta.

Knew an owner of a bait shop that put rock salt in his minnow tanks. Said it toughens them up....seem to live longer too.

I always add ground up onions in with my mousy grubs.  The fish seem to prefer them that way.

I have recently started trying this too due to the new VHS rules figuring sooner or latter we won't be able to fish with live bait anymore. I have done both salted and garlic to see what works best. I have only been out twice and have set up one salted, one garlic, and one live, but to inconclusive results due to not even getting a flag ( fished with three friends on each occasion who only used live bait they didn't get any flags either) but on both occasions the tippup with one of my garlic minnows came up with a bare hook. I don't know if it fell off or got taken by a fish. I do know i didn't loose it like you do sometimes by hooking the bottom of the hole.
