If you are already in an 18v or better battery platform ...getting a bare tool drill with the right specifications is a good start.

Milwaukee 2804-20 with the 5 or 9 amp batteries.  I run the K Drill with this setup all winter.

Dewalt 997 and a 7in lazer hand auger it cuts faster than most augers sold the gas auger about 7 years ago and been doing the drill auger set ever since much lighter. Just remove batt. while transporting

I have used various Milwaukee drils...2704(refurbished) 2803 and 2804 ...al preformed flawlessly with a 5ah and a 9ah ..I have also used an  Kdrill ..HT E-Drill..Eskimo Pistol Bit and the StrikeMaster Lite Flight all 8" models all drill units will get the job done . I also used these set ups with various versions of the Clam Plate . My buddy uses a Dewalt 996 w/Clam Plate and 8" Pistol Bit ...again a great combination ..he also uses a 9 ah Flexvolt battery ...that does bring some added benefits to the party .

I use a Dewalt 998 with an 8ah battery. I don't usually punch a ton of holes, but I am confident that it would handle turning my 8 inch auger for a long weekend with no issues.

I use the Rigid 1300 in-lb hammer drill with a 9AH battery. I got a drill from Direct Tools for so cheap I never remove it from the Auger. I remove the chuck and use the hard mount adapter from HHOgenerators on EBay, and a 6 inch pistol bit.

Pistol Bit, Milwaukee 2904, 2x5 amp batts. Works great but batts a little light on thick ice at years end. Thinking of going 12 amp this year.

I use a DeWalt DCD999 on a Cabela's EZE Drill Pro.  I live in Illinois so I've never needed more power or extended depth.  Works very well for my use and I am very happy with it.  I'm also not a big hole hopper, so my review on battery length each outing may not apply to you, but I've never drained my 8AH FlexVolt battery.
