Tough Choice
« on: Oct 27, 2009, 07:43 PM »
I need to decide if I want to get a one man flip over or an ice suit. So I am wondering if you had to have one or the other what would you get?

I had shanties before I had an Ice suit. Got my first suit this fall. But there was many a time I sat in a shanty(homemade) in just a sweatshirt with the heater going. Do you have decent winter clothes now?

I have been looking at ice suits for two years now and still have not got around to buying one. If my fish trap went missing, I would buy one again tomorrow.

A shelter is a necessity for sucsessful fishing in my oppinion, an ice suit is not. Whatever you wear to keep warm now will keep you even warmer in a shack.

My Scout came first and my Arctic Armor came second.  If I had to give one or the other up right now, the Arctic Armor would be the first to go.

Depending on what you fish, you may not need the Arctic Armor if you get a shack.

Look into the new clams, they have insulation.

Once you get a shack and have a place to get out of the wind, you'll be surprised how much more enjoyable the whole ice fishing experience is.

Also,  a flip over style shack will help you get your stuff on the ice without getting all sweated up.  This will also help you stay warm out on the ice.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

I agree get the shack first, even alittle breeze on you will cool you down faster that a strong wind on the shack.
Tight lines and safe fishing.

Without a doubt a shack is the way to go!  I know my shack gets so warm that I'm in a T-Shirt most of

the time .....then when I go check on my traps I'll throw on a sweatshirt or jacket !

Shanty is a must to stay on the ice and enjoy it when the temps start to fall.  Suits are great as well especially not getting wet knees all the time..  Get the shanty first!

Couldn't agree more. My Scout also doubles as a sled taking my stuff out, it'll hold alot of junk!!

Its easier to stay warm with a shack & heater on a cold night.....TThan a suit & heater.  I have been ice fishing for 15+ years and am on my 3 shack & still never bought a suit.

Get the shack first. I have the outer clothing to fish without one, but I prefer to fish inside unless I have a day without wind. I think we may get two days without wind around here in winter. Some days I go fishing for a few hours and sit on a bucket out of the wind next to my pickup. I do have bucket racks for my ATV and can stay nice and warm in my Arctic Armor if I go that way.

It looks like we all agree on this one. Shack first hands down.
But I would like to get the ice armor bibs to keep my knees dry.
Regular outerwear is fine if you have any type of shelter. Been using a pop-up hunting blind for a couple years now.

Another vote for the shack. The suits are awesome but I don't think there is really a need for one if you have a shack and small heater.

With a one man shanty you isolate yourself from everyone. With a good suite you can be more social..

Depends on how social a guy wants to be.    I would get the shanty first, then the suit.

Yeah, most guys love it when a stranger walks up and starts fishing right next to them....

Def. flip over first. Layer properly and you'll be out of the wind and warm inside your hut

Hate to sound like a broken record but a shack beyond a doubt.  I love fishing outside and still hop around on my bucket 95 % of the time but the shack will let you get away from the wind/snow allowing you to detect those light bites easier on those miserable days.  Also allows you to sight fish which is almost impossible without a shelter.  Good fishin
