Dead shiners! First time deadbaiting.
« on: Feb 08, 2006, 09:12 PM »
Well, I saved about  8 large shiners from the last trip, and .... well.... uh, they didnt turn out so well. Anyways, I am going to try deadbaiting it this weekend.

Large shiners a problem?
How far off the bottom?
Weeds or dropoffs?

Well, any other tips would be great. Thanks, Spencer

large shiners no problem....the bigger the better if the brute shows up......if you have patience to wait out small numbers of flags, you just might end up with some bigger fish....use a good wire leader.....(regardless of water clarity).....set up in 12-15' of water away from a good weedbed if you can....with your bait about 4-6 ' off bottom......Grump

You'll get a few different responses to this one.  I saw by your profile (NY) your allowed 5 tip-ups so try different things.  Typically dead bait is presented just off the bottom.....where dead fish lay, howver a pike's eyes are located toward the top of the head so it has a better chance of seeing it above their head.  I usually put one or two off the bottow......one or two suspended and one just under the ice....even in deep water.  Good luck!
