I have another question about Dief....are all the road accesses in the Prov Parks unmaintained in the winter???  Also...from what I have experienced...the better trout fishing is more towards the east/ dam area as opposed to my usual spots near sask landing and beaver flats????  Have also fished near the fish farm but not much for trout...just seemed to be into eyes/ burbs and pike and whiteys etc etc ???

How do you catch whitefish on dief?  I watch them swim throughout the water column on my camera, I can get them to come and look at my lure but they never show any interest in biting.  My goal this ice season is to catch one of them but have no clue what makes them bite.

Wire worm for whitefish or something really small. A good tip is to put an inline lure ( like a dropshot) over a bigger lure like a jigging spoon.

Because of the changing water level I have stayed off this lake till at least 12" of ice for walk on.  Is this not necessary, is the ice as good as any other lake at 4"?  Anyone have experience?

i can confirm that. went for a drive last week and there is open water everywhere except the very back of couteau bay. and that had a very light skim of ice. checked out a few other bays and found open water. depending on weather (mostly wind) from what i seen it won't be til after Christmas early Jan.

Had a look at the bay just north of Elbow two days ago. No ice except for a few small floating pans right up against shore.

I would imagine that with this major Cold spell Dief Lake should have finally started to ice over a bit on the big part of the lake !!? We should be getting some "eye witness" reports soon...?  ;)

Appears that a lot of the lake in the Elbow area has iced over in the past day. A few open areas of open water , but the freeze up has started. Will be a while yet. Be safe.

Nice to know....thanks. According to the so called experts....for every 24 hrs period where the average temp is around  - 8 C or 17 Farenheit it will add approx 1 inch...so "some time" in the next few days...or weeks...or months....we will be drilling holes in Safe Ice.   And.... >:(

Has anyone witnessed ice fishing off Elbow south-east to the quappelle dam?  Was open water to shore on Sunday. doubt if it is OK but have my best luck on that lake.  Hope to save an hour drive to check myself.

The McKenzie Arm has only had ice for 4 days. My guess would be that it isn't safe yet.
