Anyone know if Northwest Bay is open?

Can't say for sure but i would guess its mostly open by now. I was out on NW bay on the 1st and it lost 4-5" of ice in a few hours while i was out. With the temps where they have been, and the rain this past weekend, id be shocked to see ice out there still

Looking at the satellite from yesterday it looks like the very north end still has ice but other than that it is wide open.

Some great info here. Can't wait to use it on some of those big gills I come across in LG.  Thanks Roger Houck for another great video!

Brand new How-To video going up at 7pm tonight from Roger Houck out of Brant Lake NY on the Roger's Rigs Youtube Channel.  Roger shows how he prepares those grease chickens for the oven and the smoker.  They can make a great meal.  Come check it out!

A lot of places but as with any lake, some access is ready before others. MDB, Hearthstone and Fort Anne beach (pilots knob) are a few.

Obviously I was kidding. But i am getting a strong itch to walk on water again. If anyone has any tips on good early ice opportunities in the region please let me know. I was thinking/hoping the saranac lake area might get ice by early December?  I’m way down in Jersey so don’t know when they lock up up there. Thankful for this group to keep me posted.

Shouldn’t be too long with this cold weather. I was wrapping boats in the Adks yesterday. They had snow on the ground and a few small ponds locked up !

Looking for recommendations on a bait caster set up, something around 28-30" for fishing in my smaller shack. What setups do you lake trout experts use?

I’m not fan of bait casters.  It’s going to limit your rod selection.  I like spinning setups . If your chasing marks in the water column you need to be able to dump line down the hole fast. I like tuned up custom rods. (36 inch ) 10 lb braid.  Just make sure the reel can hold a couple hundred feet of line.  Most smaller ice reels won’t hold that much line.

already have several spinning set ups for Lakers just wanted to add a bait cast set up for some heavier presentations and faster retrieve at times when you can't reel fast enough

Yeah ,  the biggest thing for me is getting the bait down 100 feet to the fish when they chase it around. You need to be able to get line back down the hole fast.  I don’t think a bait caster is going to do that as good as a spinning set up.  Check haat rods.  They have some sweet rods for bait casters .  I don’t think the fish get big enough in the lake to require a beefy set up. Most fish i catch are 25-29 inches. I use a medium action with 10 lb. a big fish for the lake would be high 30s.

BaitCasters work just fine and if it’s a decent baitcaster with a quality breaking system, you can freespool it down to the fish just as fast as any spinning reel.

No way a bait caster will drop line faster then a spinning set up. Maybe if you have a 3 oz jig head.  You can roll braid off a spinning reel faster then it will sink .

Plenty of guys use these set ups on George and other lake trout lakes in the area. All I'm looking for a recommendations from guys that use them. As mentioned I have several other set ups just looking for another one that's a bit different
