Mr. Buddy Portable Heater
« on: Aug 18, 2010, 03:16 PM »
I have a Mr. Buddy Portable Proane Heater. does either 4,000 or 9,000 btu's supposedly. I have a 6x9 shack. I'm trying to decide if I should use this Or a guy I know that I swap stuff with has a rinnai ventless propane heater that I could mount on a wall and puts out more. Or I could put a small woodstove in the shack and keep the buddy for backup. Any thoughts? Or experiences what would be the best idea?

This is looking in through my door. I have that woodstove but it's too long. It's 3 feet long. I'd need one about 18" inches long so I wouldn't lose valuable space. A buddy of mine has one that is small enough. I like the idea of a woodstove for heat and cooking on it. But I could also just as easy run propane heater and I have a propane cookstove. So, if I went propane I could easily bring a tank out with me and mount it to the front of the trailer(My shack in on an old popup)

I have the old style Mr. Heater with only the one tank and it puts out more that enough for a 6 x 9 shack. That Mr. Heater on low should cook you right out of that shack. I use a steel pie pan that sits perfectly on top of my heater, it's kind of oval and reaches under the handle. I heat up stuff on it. It would be nice to have a full blown stove to cook on though.

Cool. I liked the thought of my mr. buddy heater. Takes up a lot less space.

Leave it. You add unnecassary weight if you finish the inside.

I wasn't planning on it. I just figured I'd leave it as it is...

Thanks Hazzy. Yeah, I don't want the dogs freezing this winter or my daughter when they are in the shack.

if your shack isn't to big what we always do is take a blow torch in the little 1 man shacks and it gets cooking pretty good.

I have a 4x8 sheathed with luan, unfinished interior.  I caulked around the corners of the framing from inside, to limit air and moisture getting into the shelter.  I just use a sunflower heater and crack the window....works awesome.  On those warm days when a heater isn't really needed, it would be better to have the buddy, or sunflower, so you can leave it outside to make more room.  Especially in the smaller permanent shacks where room is limited.  I also have a 6x8 that has luan interior and is uninsulated, with T&G ceiling that has 1/2 styro insulation.  I have a small wall mount that is perfect.  It is out of the way and keeps it very comfy in there.

I have a 6x8 shack w/luan exterior and 1" styro insulation in the walls and ceiling.  I don't have the floor insulated (although I am doing that this fall) and the Mr. Buddy works great.  I fire it up on high when I first get out there and then back it off to low.  On most days I can get it up to at least 68-70 degrees.  You can also wall mount it to save space or keep it from getting kicked over.  That's what I do with mine.

One problem with a wood stove is you have to really stoke it to get it hot enough to cook on, and it makes it way to hot inside.   I have a wood stove in my Perm Shack and I had to put hinges on the windows so I can open them when I cook.
