as long as the body of water doesnt dry up in the summer or freeze solid in the winter,

there is a good chance that there will be something in it.

The white spots on your fish may be caused by a protozoan commonly called "Ich" and pronounced "ick".

I'd like to start trapping my own.
I know I need a trap. But where do people usually put their bait traps.
I know in a pond. But what should I look for?
Also, what is used for.bait in a bait trap.

I normally put it a foot off bottom.... and use old roy dry dog food.. small farm ponds and bogs always give me the best bait.

i noticed the goldens i trapped from my spot are very light in coloration, almost completely silver, compared to the ones
i threw in my tank from the baitshop.... is this cause they have been in the tank? or just because of the body of water they came from?

You need a permit from IFnW to bait a closed pond.

typically it slows down after Jan. Nov thru Jan are the best months to trap.

when scouting some new ponds and bogs out how long do you let your trap soak for the first time in new waters?

12 hours. If you don't have anything, it's time to move.

After mid-February, it is hard to trap bait...good luck.

wow i was thinking about just letting it soak for like 2hrs max come check it to see if i had anything at all in it even one...then if i did i was going to return it the next day for the 12hr soak to get the numbers i want....what do you guys think? why is it harder to get bait late winter?

I wish I had a technical explanation, but bait trapping seems to shut off. Even in a pond you KNOW has bait, it is tough to get anything in a trap. Does anyone have an educated explanation?

well im heading out to go soak a bait trap or two....have found a few good looking bogs that are short walks from the road that i found using google earth....hopefully turns something up....just going to let them soak for a few hours just to see if anythings in them...if it turns up good then im going to let them soak for the long haul to bring in some numbers....maybe post some pics later....

visited a sweet spot of mine today. 2 hour soak yielded 125 goldens... mostly mediums.

black trap didnt produce a dang thing. same spot.
