Does anyone feed their bait? if not how long can you keep bait alive with no food? My water is clean, cold and plenty of O2. thanks for any help
Yes feed your bait gold fish flakes, ounce per week I do this because I keep mine outside if I dont, they get real skinney and they dont swim right. I like hardy shinners and they stay fat as long as I feed them. Just a few extra water changes.. Worth it.Been doing this for 20 years same thing..
they eat fish flakes? I have roughly 1000 goldens and I'll have to feed them something if I want them all to live. Lol
I think that I finally have this thing figured out, three days ago, I had moved a trap to a new spot, pulled 5 doven, moved another trap over there, yesterday, pulled 9 dozen, moved a third trap over ther, today I pulled 24 dozen, yes 291 shiners! I brought home 2 of the traps and left the black trap painted white(had no fish at all today) and put it in one of the holes that had all of the fish in it. I am statring to wohder if it is just a bad trap? makes you wonder, it looks just like the galvanized traps just dipped in something. I am going to screw around with that trap for a while to see what I have to do to get it to catch fish, I am a mechanical test engineer, it is what I do. I may try another color next.
So I went through all of my bait and got rid of a bunch of the bait that was too small and found several of these fish, I am not too good at fish identification, I went through the IFW's identification picture and can not tell what it is, the picture does not show all of the blue in this fish, Any ideas? Blue gill, sunfish?(Image removed from quote.)

I googled bluegill pictures and I think you are all right, I will toss it back next time I go. I do my traping in a beaver bog, a little surprising they are in there.
if its a bluegill, kill it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's an invasive species.
Trouble by the BucketfulThat’s what the illegal introduction of exotic species brings to Maine’s waters. Some thoughtless individuals are attempting to destroy the future of Maine’s nativefisheries. These non-sportsmen illegally stock the type of fish they prefer to catch, without regard for the environmental havoc they inflict on the resource. Illegal stockingselfishly denies the people of Maine the right to decide what is best for our waters. Please help fight this serious problem.• It is illegal to transport live fish without a permit.• It is illegal to dump unused baitfish into any waterway.• There is a $10,000 fine for a conviction of illegalstocking.• Always keep your ears and eyes open for thosewho are committing these senseless acts. The above was cut and pasted from the IFW rule book.
What type of permit do you have to have to transport live bait for personal use?
Mainute, Just don't want ya getting smacked with that 10k fine if your busted. If your ever in doubt you can always contact your local warden.
