My black trap works fine.  In fact, the 2 galvies Im also using havent netted 1 bait fish. My black trap has got em all...

Got thinking about why everyone puts both kinds of traps right beside each other too. Why wouldnt the bait migrate to the shiney one? Put them farther apart in my opinion, they would produce similar results.
I have them about 10 feet apart, I put the painted white trap back in the same hole it came out of. We will see if it eally makes a difference tomorrow, or if I have just put it in 3 bad spots.

If you picked 3 bad spots so did the rest of us, let us know how it works.

I think thats it too.

Thats why putting them 4 feet apart gets different results in my opinion. 20 feet would be better.

Spring fed, dug deep pond with plenty of shade and very little vegetation. AND of course the right bait to start with. Shinners only no chubs.

I said that I would post about my black trap and how I painted it white. It has been 2 days since I painted it and I havent caught anything in it. I am starting to wonder if it is the trap. The galvanized traps have the mesh that comes to a point and would keep the fish from wanting to swim out? The black/painted white trap has a ring around the inside making it smooth. Do you guys pull those rings out? I am at a loss. 2 week in the water and only 2 fish.

Hauled in 7-8 dozen fatheads and dace, and 1 shiner.

All in my black trap but 1 fathead that was in a new galvie.... Im starting to think the galvie traps are junk.

Mine didn't have the rings in them.  I think you would do better if you pulled them out.

I prefer the Gee galvanized traps.  I do have a couple black traps  with the rings at the opening.  I catch bigger minnows than I usually want in them so one of the black traps I wire in the rubber gasket that goes on a garden hose between the faucet which shims up the hole for the size I want from that trap. Otherwise I get bullheads & small green sunfish when they hatch and get a certain size.

My black trap is the rubber/vinyl coated one, from Wally World.

Had it over 10 years and never had any problem getting bait in it, even when it was new.

where are you dropping your traps?  near shore, by structure, off bottom right under ice, halfway....

I checked my trap today.  I pulled 5 dozen shiners, and about a dozen little dace.

I have tried a little off bottom, and half way almost everyplace was about 4-5ft of water. I tried around tree structure, no structure, the edge of weed beds. Nothing at all not even a tadpole. A solid 4 days of attempts and still had to buy bait to fish yesterday hahaha
