You got any bait over there GasBlaster? Or does anyone know if Sebago Bait is open? I'd like to throw in a few traps maybe tomorrow.

the bait pond is walkable now so the traps are going back in .  I only have about 100 or so right now ,But the tank will be full in soon if the little buggers play along. Come grab a few in the morning if you need some .

ok I am on board with the galvi traps .    22 in the galvi and 2 in the black .  Slow day at the pond I hope the numbers improve .  I still need like 800 more for the season .
I'm headed out to get a silver spay bomb and give my black traps a paint job .

After reading all the posts I went out and got a small trap at Hussey's General Store.  I set it out this afternoon and will check it tomorrow evening.  Had @ 2" of ice on the bog in Augusta where I am trying trapping.

On another note, I drove by Togus pond this morning and there were some folks there fishing on 2" of ice.  I saw 2 different groups.  I stopped and talked to one of the guys who was on shore -- they weren't staying too long given the conditions.  Can't say I blame them!

I am just about sld on the silver traps. I was able to get my traps out where I wanted them this morning. went back this afternoon  and had 4 or 5 in each galvinized trap and none in the black trap. I have onlt caught one in the black trap since I have had it, only 3 feet from the galvinized trap. I think I wil bring it home next time and paint it if there isn't some shiners in it.

Bait in the Tank...
Just got back from Virginia last night, so I haven't had a chance to trap bait yet.  Got a BLACK trap in at 11:30 today and emptied around 6 dozen out of it at 4pm.  Not too bad for a 4 1/2 hour soak!!!

I caught around 1,000 shiners with my pull today, so I pulled my trap. I will put it back if I need more.

So I set my first trap out a few days ago, and I didn't trap anything -- not even a polliwog.

I was talking to guy at work about trapping bait and he said, "Just come out to my house.  I have a small pond that someone but a bunch of shiners in years ago."

So I went out after work yesterday and threw a trap in, and went back tonight -- 24 hours later -- and this is what I had....

A little more than 10 dozen in one 24 hour soak.  Sweet!

We (Ice Drinka ) and myself have a little pond on the familes property that we stocked many years ago with about two dozen minnos. Now there are litarally thousands of bait in it. We feed them all spring summer and fall with old bread  crackers and dog food. This year we put the trap in and when pulling it out for the first time I could feel it shaking. hahah. There were so many minnows that it looked like a can of sardines. Two pulls of the trap and we have about 12 dozen nice sized minnos. I feel good about not runnning out of bait this season. ;D
What if the "Hokey Pokey" is really what its all about??

I started setting traps this week.  Set one in my dace honey hole which as usual produced hundreds of dace from 1-3" and also tried a new place for shiners on a tip from a neighbor.  Well the hot tip turned into a fizzle.  I set a trap on monday and was only able to get the trap set out 5' from shore in 2' of water.  On a two day soak not even a tad pole,  the bait was still in the trap.  Not even any water bugs, nymphs, caddis, dragon fly larvae.  hopefully as we get more ice here on the mid coast I'll be able to get out on the pond farther and set my trap out over deep water to see if they are suspended over the deep water.

One major set back in my bait tank this year.  My trusty Fiberglass over wood tank had a major leak,  and some delamination.  The more I tried to fix it the more I was gonna sink money into it.  One 3x5 inch spot turned into me peeling off the fiberglass mat on almost every side of the tank.  So I got mad and threw it out on the burn pile.  Luckily I had a 55gal drum contantment storage that I use to use for a water tank for cattle when I used to have them. I spent some time tonight to put together a little something out of some scrap wood.  Should hold somewhere around 150 gallons of water.  Gonna use a 1000gph pond pump.  Container measures 54"Lx36"Wx34"H.  I'll post pictures in the morning

I was finaly able to get back out to my traps today, the ice was about 3 inches thick. I haven't been able to check them since monday. My one galvanized trap had 2 dozen, the other only had one. I noticed that there may have been a decent gap in the halves. The black trap had 1 shiner. In 10 days it has caught 2 shiners. I rebaited the traps and brought the black trap home and painted it white. I took it out to soak in the same exact spot and thought what the heck I will check the other traps while I was there and had almost 3 dozen in about 3 hours. Pretty good for me. I will go back in the morning to check the white one, hope it starts catching bait.
Any ideas why the black traps dont work?

My black trap works fine.  In fact, the 2 galvies Im also using havent netted 1 bait fish. My black trap has got em all...

Got thinking about why everyone puts both kinds of traps right beside each other too. Why wouldnt the bait migrate to the shiney one? Put them farther apart in my opinion, they would produce similar results.
