I have always done the best in the shallows along weeds or any other hiding spot for them to stay in.

This thread made me go out and buy a trap today, I followed all of the advice I have read. I will check it in the morning and see what I get. I don't have a dog so I used bread. Hope it works. Could only find a black trap, I may have to paint it.
No you didn't, you bought a black trap.  ;D

I checked at Wallys, KTP and at the big C and that is all I could find. I am borrowing a galvanized one tomorrow and placing them a couple feet apart and see what the difference is. I am guessing they get a bum dope because they are sold by the bib C. I just want to catch some bait, i don't care how i get it.

Good Luck and don't get discourage on your 1st attempt, the only person I know is Maine Duckhunter that has any luck with black traps but you might be the 2nd. Good Luck

Went out to check my trap this morning and broke through up to my calf and decided that that trap was going to sit for a couple of days. It is 47 degrees and it apears to have melted of a lot of ice. I had my 2 borrowed galvanized traps and set them closer to the shore where I would not have to ge on the ice to check it. I may need to take someone lighter back with me tomorrow.

I use a small tree 8-10' with a ''V'' at the top strip any limbs and set it on top of my trap run line up over the "V"
and back at me along the trunk so when I pick it up  I grab line and trunk together as one keep it tight and you can slide it out under thin ice from a hole chipped at the shore you can cut the butt end at a 45 and rechip your hole the next day most of the time

I picked up 2 galvi traps at the big C today . I will check my bait pond tomorrow and see if I can walk on it .  Testing black and galvi side by side for goldens . I still need like 500 more goldens for the year . I stopped when the skim ice showed and plan on starting again as soon as its safe to walk on .

I always use a long rope on mine for that reason

If you use a long rope, how do you get it through the hole? Wouldn't it toggle in the hole? I tied it to a standing dead tree.
The other traps I put in are on a long rope,  and they are easibly retreavable, but they are on the bottom and are not through the ice, under.
