any suggestions on cooking smelt. My father used to broil them when I was a kid but I never ate them back then and was wondering which cooking method would be best.

Get a heavy duty pair of sissors, cut off the head and slit the belly. run your finger down the slit to get the guts out. Rinse the off and bread them and deep fry. Serve w/ tarter or cocktail sauce.

I second that! They are also good wrapped in tin foil and butter and cooked on an open fire!
