Summit Lake ice
« on: Jan 17, 2019, 05:33 PM »
I drove around Summit today.  95% open water.  Back of coves had gray ice.  I really think this is a good thing.  After the snow Saturday things will freeze very rapidly.  Should be all clear strong ice.  Looking for good ice in a week!

Sunday it was 98.9% water. Which was a good thing...missed the snow. Would guess it's iced up fairly well, but no idea of thickness. Can't get out for couple of days.

Ya i seen them out yesterday evening must of been some brave ones cause everywhere i spud i found 1 1/2-2 inches of ice wasn't even all that great looking either . I'll never understand stand why people put themselves at risk on unsafe ice.

Scott who owns gittin jiggy with it posted yesterday on the bait shop facebook page. A little ice made it through the rain so hopefully here soon some solid ice. Not sure if the thickness as of right now but heading out after work Tomorrow with my spud just to check thickness in a few coves and test my new gas auger.

Was at summit today. A few people fishing the coves. Still some open water near the main lake. The bank can be a little tricky to get on some stable ice. Going from 1 or 1 1/5 to 3 3 1/5  within feet. Spud my way around and fished a random spot. Buddies first time on the ice so the  ice talking made him to nurvious to venture to my spots. Coves are the way to go this weekend for sure and the kayak lauch is pretty solid.

From the bottom of my thumb to top of the scoop was the thickness.

For me it wasn't good. I really was only out actually fishing for maybe 45 minutes. Went out to check my new shanty, auger and try to get a buddies "first time on the ice" cherry popped. Didnt mark but was in 9 feet near no structure so wasn't expecting anything.

Planning on hitting it Thursday or Friday.  I've heard the bites been a little slow and the water clarity isn't very good like it normally is

I fished it for a couple hours Monday, and caught well over 50 gills with only 6 being 8"+, and I can't remember a time that happened there in 16 years. I spoke with a few other avid regulars that use a tape measure (that's the key here...lol) and they reported similar results. I'd assume that Summit is off this year, and I pray it's just a cycle thing, although gills aren't know to cycle quite like crappie (hopefully sparkplug comes out from the darkness to confirm). I'll probably head north for the rest of the year to find the gills I'm looking for.

On another note, ice was trashed with Pall Mall cigs butts and you can til he likely had a kid with him because there was foil wrappers with a PPJ sandwich with the crust removed and thrown in the hole, in the same shack/area. I can't tell you how much I love going to a state park, seeing trash and cigs all over the ice in just one weekend.
I wish I was good at ice fishing!

I was at a public lake Saturday and seen the same thing, cigarette butts and caps off propane bottles. I just don’t understand why people do this.  :(
