Using frozen dead bait in NH
« on: Jan 17, 2019, 10:02 AM »
I've fished northern NH for years in open water and once last year for ice fishing. Caught my largest pike at 21lbs. in the first 2 hrs of fishing so I'm hooked on NH.I've never tried using dead frozen bait hearing/mackeral like I do here in RI. Is there any laws against using dead frozen bait in NH? I can't find this rule anywhere in the abstract. I also read you can't use trebles or more then 1 baited hook so large bait  will be difficult to hold with 1 hook. Any responce is greatly appreciated.

No you can use dead frozen bait, only one hook point with bait.

From what I read, you can only use frozen herring in the CT and Merrimack Rivers.

Thanks Redneck-I know laws are different in each state and I even called DEM and they couldn't tell me yes or no.

In re-reading my post, it looks like I was referring to MA fishing laws.  I don't think the Merrimack runs thru NH, lol.  Sorry for the confusion.

The Merrimack River? It most certainly does run through NH! From the Mass border all the way to the lakes region! (Franklin NH)

Massachusetts 4.01 8 a 10:  Herring (Clupea spp.) may be used as bait in the Connecticut River, Merrimack River, and coastal rivers and streams, only as provided in 321 CMR 4.01: Table 1 and 322 CMR, but may not be possessed or used as bait in other rivers and streams, or in lakes, ponds, or reservoirs.

Sorry guys.  Wrong state.

That's right Mow.
The Merrimack runs down hill from the "confluence of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers in Franklin, New Hampshire,[3] flows southward into Massachusetts, and then flows northeast until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Newburyport."
I've fished it at the very top and the bottom, but never in between.

I've never seen any restrictions on dead bait in NH, either.

Some lakes, such as Lake Francis and the Connecticut Lakes restrict the use of yellow perch as bait. That would be the only restriction I’m aware of on dead bait.

True, Scott!
Actually, I knew that and forgot.  :-[
Thanks for the correction.
