What’s your preferred pike bait?
« on: Jan 16, 2019, 06:16 PM »
Hey guys, new to the forum and figured I’d make a convo, I hear constantly either people prefer dead, alive, smelt, shiners, what do you prefer?
On a second note, I am striking out with pike lately, fishing the Belgrade’s. Do you generally stick to shore or go further out?
Thanks!

I have found heavy medium to large shiners work best for me in the lakes I fish.

I presume you are speaking of Belgrades in MAINE??  Live Shiners 4-5 " work well for me. NO Steel leader, circle hooks give you a nice hook up in corner of mouth.
Check Maine' site or Pike fishing topics for videos on Pike fishing....you'll get plenty of great tips to help you

I push the eye of a treble hook through each end and clip a steel leader to each one, quick strike style.

Yes, Belgrade Maine.

I’m not going to lie I’m very suprised by the amount of people that use hot dogs. Regular ball park frank style?!

Yep ballpark franks or whatever is cheap. Another good bait seems to be a teardrop with a wax worm, and just to make it interesting use 2 pound test. Good times

chubs or suckers - 6-10"

stained water-
I also add flash(a blade up line) and sound(small jig rattle tied on the tag end of palomar knot for hook).

clear water-
I still use the blade up the line, for flash.

smelly baits aren't the limit to scent attraction either.  you can add a chunk of sponge up the line as well.  soak it in you favorite juice.  this extends the distance they can detect, via currents. IMO  if there is no chance of a catfish invasion, you can smash small fish at the edge of the hole for chumming action also.  pike have a great sense of smell and taste.  take advantage of it!  call them to you!

Big bluegills from the same lake I'm setting my tipups.
Either dead or alive presentations work. Dead baits when the bite is slower.
Might have to trim the dorsal fin and clip the tail if they're too lively.
The best benefit?
If pike aren't hitting you get to eat the bait!
The guarantee is fresh fish for dinner!!!

Before I knew about our 10,000 laws against fishing

us kids would use small bluegills or perch for bait.  If you're lucky enough to catch a shiner or a ciscoe, it would be even better.

I was making a rice bowl with shrimp the other day and thought that would make good bait. Anyone try shrimp?

Used to use raw popcorn shrimp for trout in pristine lakes. Once they taste or smell it they can’t resist.

If legal in your state (i am unfamiliar with Maine's fishing regs) I find bluegills to be the best. In response to the questions about hot dogs. Whatever brand is cheap at the grocery store. I am sure there are a ton of ways to hook them up. Best way I have found is to just press a treble hook down into the middle of it so it hangs horizontally. Circle hooks or the like can just hook it on whacky rig. There is some hilarious underwater footage of pike messing with hotdogs. They seem a bit confused by whatever it is and scope it out and even play with it a bit, then just decide to grab it and run away with it like any other dead bait.

Good luck and welcome to the site!
It doesn't sound that appealing to most people I talk to, but going out onto a frozen lake and staring into a hole for the day is my favorite thing to do.

I always liked live suckers about 6" long. But they are getting expensive $8.50 a dozen and sometimes they are not even 6". Don't get me started on live bait cost, plus they are counting them one at a time, lucky if you get 13 in a dozen. What they call northern suckers we use for walleye, what they call walleye suckers you can use for crappie and perch. Live minnow bait prices have sky rocketed.
