Who's heading north?
« on: Dec 27, 2018, 06:05 PM »
My annual trip to the UP is just about 3 weeks away.  I can hardly wait.  I was fortunate to get out on my pond twice for a couple hours earlier this year.  But, I am so looking forward to being off the beaten path and away from civilization.

Does anyone else have a trip up north planned?
I used to get excited about a 20 inch bass until I caught my first 40 inch dolphin.

Is Wisconsin still planting the Seeforellens?
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Nope. That's why I want to go. They are big last few years and will start to fall off

Why is everybody cutting back or discontinuing browns? Michigan is doing the same thing and of course we just manage for put and take here in Indiana.

Must be the declining forage base in the Great Lakes?

Browns can handle warmer water and hold over easier each year, are beautiful, and fight awesome. Not sure.

Been going north (Wisc) for 2 weeks now. If you wanna ice fish I guess you gotta drive a little. Not sure if we’ll ever get ice here along the I 80 corridor this year !
Fish as much as you can we're not here forever!

Sure doesn't look like it today. It's pouring rain here in Ligonier and all the ponds are wide open. OTOH things can change in a heartbeat as we've also seen weather like this and then sub zero temps in a few days. Whether that will happen is another question.

Good luck, Sylvan!  A week from now, I will be 6.5 hours north of here!  It can't get here fast enough.

Packed up and heading to Da UP at 5:00AM tomorrow.  12 inches of ice and a couple feet of snow.  -30 on Sunday with the windchill.  I sure am hoping we put some toothy critters on da ice!

Survival of the browns tanked in the 2000s which is why Michigan cut back

Wisconsin cut back their wild rose strain (one of the strains michigan saw declining survival in iirc) so they could keep their kings at the behest of the charter industry

Totally get it but I'd rather catch a 20 lb brown than a 20 lb boot...ha
