Longer (32”+) ML Rod
« on: Oct 14, 2018, 04:14 PM »
I’ve been on the search for an outside walleye/perch rod that’s Medium light, at least 32” long and has a fairly fast action. Bonus points for carbon/graphite. My budget is $50 and under, so no customs.  Any suggestions?

these seem popular.

I do have one of these in a 28" ML for inside fishing, but unfortunately they don't make a ML in 32"+

Yup...48" HT Ice  Blue and/or 36" Schooley Arctic Ice...both around $20. They are classified as H and UL respectively but I consider them both ML...and I would not hesitate to use either for perch ( for sure) and walleye ( plenty of backbone for the task). Good luck.

That is a tough find.  I did find a Clam Carbon Ice Team rod, 32" in ML power.  Reel seat and all. The line guides were not designed for hole hopping, but right action and length.  I think they're no longer made.

I have a 42" ML Graphite rode blank. trying to figure how short to make it. I like the action so any cutting will be from the butt end. what are the benefits of a rod longer than 30"? I usually fish perch and crappie.

One advantage of a longer rod is to be able to stand up and still have the ability to keep the rod tip near the hole to avoid wind from bowing your line.  Also, it keeps you away from the hole, so as to not spook fish as easily.

So you can still do the monster hooksets like we all love to do in open water!  ;D j/k...kinda...when fishing deeper or for heavy mouth fish it does make for a better hookset. Also yes, being able to stand is very nice, without having to stoop or lean towards the hole to keep rod tip down.

I googled "Clam Carbon Ice Team rod" and, lo and behold, Cabela's is carrying them.  There is a 32" ML style.  This looks to be exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
