IMHO, the longer they are, the more weight they disperse. I left mine full length.

What size skis ....and what size sled ? Downhill skis..14-16 Foot rope and weight to the rear are the basics ...I put my back edge of my rear riser 1 foot from ski edge ...the front edge of my front riser is appox 1 foot from upturn of ski...unless you have really long skis this should suffice most skis...mock up something and adjust for your sled ..move risers till it looks "right".

I used longer downhills and they are great except for one thing. Mine fit into my truck just fine but if you go with a friend make sure they aren't tooooo long to fit into an SUV. Mine are about 4" to long to fit in so I end up driving every time.

My whole sled without the skis is longer than my truck bed plus with it being a 2500, it is tall. Hard for me to load it by myself so I just us a trailer, problem solved.

After I killed my Dakota I cut mine down a bit so they would fit in my car. Probably about 6". I don't know offhand how long they are now but they aren't too short. Haven't noticed a difference pulling my sled around. Still easy-peasy. ;D

The longer the ski the more it will ride on top of the snow. I put 6 ft skis on a skid and it pulls much easier now.

Stick, that's not a bus, its a tank!!!  I would ask if you pull it by hand, but I noticed where you are from.  Sorry you guys can't use machines!  That's just not right.  As Always, Take Care and Stay Safe

You ain't kidding snitch, makes for a long drag to get to a good spot, but the comfort of sitting in that thing with the nice boat seats makes up for it. I'm trying to find a way around the no machines law as we speak. been in contact with the Fish and boat commission trying to see if I could retro fit an old snowblower with tracks to pull it and just walk in between the too. Not a vehicle because I'm not riding anything. Wouldn't be any different then bringing a gas powered auger on the ice.

Any one eve use old water skies?  They would seems to work just as well and have a wider foot print from the skies.

skinnier skis = less friction = easier drag

Yes^

Make em longer, = less weight per square inch too..

If water skis were great for snow, I wonder what they'd be called? Lol

If you took the metal skegs off, you could call them "Skinny Snowboards". If you left them on, you could call them "Ice Scratchers", - hmmm, where have I seen that name before?  ::)

I tried a set of cross county skis, big mistake.  Made it harder to pull for some reason.  I know that the CC skis have a rough edge and this could cause issues.  Took those skis off.  Gonna try different pair.  Have good down hill skis for the flip over and is very easy to pull.  Nez

Built a smitty this year and love it! I used a pair of downhill skis and did not cut them. Wishing I had made one years ago.
