Smitty Sled issues.
« on: Jan 22, 2018, 03:44 PM »
Wondering if anyone has experience with any issues with their sleds, and I'm wondering if my choice of ski's is perhaps affecting the effectiveness of the sled. It does not seem to be much easier to pull in deeper snow.

Right now, my skis are youth ski's and I'm assuming this might be my issue. The skis are just shorter than my Evo 2 sled. (58" or so). I'm using 10" risers and have the 16' lead rope, running through the tips of the ski's, though to my eye holes (where my cam straps secure down in the back).

I've scrolled through the thread and found that everyone loves them, but few experiencing issues with their builds. I'm sure its a builder error as the idea is genius. But I haven't yet experienced the easier pulling. Maybe I'm expecting too much considering my gear all in is likely in the 150-170lb range.

I'll add pictures of mine shortly.

Use the longest ski you can get into your vehicle...

The longer the ski the better...

Is too much of your load too far forward?  That'll cause it to dig like a plow.

Where the risers are located determine the location of weight, a bit more to the rear of center allows the front to lift/float/glide.

I'll withhold judgement 'til your post of photos.     ;)2

Longer skis will definetly help......That is why all the Downhill racers use long skis to gain speed...... Also make sure your skis are square and not toeing in or out...

Also be sure you get  "parabolic" all mountain skis.  Cross country skis are the worst.

You lose the benefit of the "parabolic" when you put mounting blocks on each end... Skis work best with the weight/mount focused on the area the  bindings were mounted..

But obviously, that's not how most people build theirs...
