One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
« on: Jan 16, 2018, 03:22 PM »
Kind of odd, but I was wondering about the single and plural of fish.

I caught a Trout.       I caught a bunch of trout.
I caught a Bluegill.    I caught a bunch of bluegills.
I caught a Pike.        I caught a bunch of Pike.
I caught a Walleye.   I caught a bunch of walleyes.
I caught a Salmon.   I caught a bunch of Salmon.
I caught a Crappie.   I caught a bunch of Crappies.
I caught a Smelt.     I caught a bunch of Smelt.

When do you add the "s" to make it plural and when don't you?
Is there a English rule on this or is it more of a regional thing? ???

Good Luck all

I don’t bother with the “s”.

In the grouping of sentences to the right, eliminate “a bunch” and replace with “several.”  Then you can eliminate the s on the end of the fishes name.  Actually, “bunch” tells the reader that there are more than one, so technically you could eliminate the s anyway.  And no, I’m not an English teacher, but it is interesting that it’s understood that some fish’s specie names “sound more plural than some others”, and the plural of goose is geese, but the plural of moose is not meese!  LOL!  ;D

The panfish said, "That's a bunch of crappie."

The carp said, "Don't play koi with me."

No "s" is used whether you use "a bunch" or "several" (which is the preferred verbiage). So yes, there is an ( not a ) English rule. Use the word "an" in a sentence when followed by a word beginning with a vowel; use "a" at all other times.

Here's a possible rule, if the name of the fish has "fish" on the end, you don't add an s for plural.

I caught a bluefish or lots of bluefish.

Catfish, fallfish, goldfish maybe there's a few other FW fish that end in "fish".
