In my experience there are a few predictable ones like 18 mile creek area and a few others but for the most part lake erie ice fishing is very unpredictable.  If you fish an East wind early or late ice season you could be looking at a date with the Coast Guard.

I saw that Lake Erie was locked up off Point Breeze for two days,  now ,from my front door, I can hear the waves crashing in. So much for fhat early freeze, and wishful thinking! Probably ok in the long run, as the first ice was corn cobbed, and shoved anyways! I will report on conditions as they happen.

Some nice charts on the ice coverage. As of yesterday, 16%.  Looked good in the western basin from Port Clinton to Toledo. Ice cover at Pt Albino on the Canada side but nothing other than shore ice on our side.  They do expect 40% coverage in the next few days.

I’m at sturgeon point right now Ice looks great as far as I can see. 1st 200 yards is a little rough but that’s always the case. Hopefully it can stand up to the wind we’re supposed to get on Tuesday. If that’s the case it won’t be long.

I'm hoping we get a good year on Erie. Way more convenient for me than going to chatauqua. Plus I bought a new atv so I don't have to walk. Getting old and fat! Lol. Fingers crossed. Good luck and be safe everyone! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

New Years Day I did the drive by, stop and look along the East side of Erie from Sturgeon Pt. to the Sm Boat Harbor.  Sturgeon Pt. has stationary shove ice out from shore about 300-400 yds, then loose moving shove ice that was being wind pushed toward the 18-mile creek area.  Farther out I could see wave rollers being pushed by the Southwest wind, no ice being made out there.  At Hamburg Beach there is stationary shove ice out as far as you can see.  There was no up and down ice movement.  The shove ice surface doesn't seem to be too bad but it will take awhile on foot to break a trail.  There were 5 other vehicles looking over the ice at Hamburg but no takers.  Sm Boat Harbor has flat ice surface with very little snow, about 20 plus huts out and a couple out past the end of the inner break wall.  Erie I think still needs some work.

Right on Perch Chaser, I can hear the waves 100 yds from my front door crashing onto the already formed very high ice mounds. Trees are bent and twisting violently. I watched youngsters walking out on the high ice mounds at Point Breeze the other day, and of their safety, especially around the blow holes formed from wave action, then I looked back into my youth, doing the same crazy thing. I almost called the Evans Police to have them chase these teenagers off the ice.

The picture looks bleek for some time to come! Wow, if only the winds would stop, it might lock up again. I hate the thought of shove ice and ice cube mine field!  Lol

With these winds today the broke up ice and slush to the Southwest will be pushed under the ice off Hamburg Beach.  This under ice can be a real problem for us.  I have seen it where you can't get a line down through it.

7 inches of ice out there on New Year's Eve. Spudded to deeper water and still 5-6.  Wind ruined her until tonight

Just returned from Evangola State Park. The ice now extends out far as you can see. The ice is honey combed, with some low shoving. There are some ckear ice areas as well.

Who knows, now that the winds stopped and f(orecast lows are arriving!

Took a ride down to Sturgeon Point today for work so stopped by marina. Ice as far as I could see. Didn’t venture out as I didn’t have my spud or a buddy.

How far out do you usually have to go to get on some fish at sturgeon point?

Does it ever become safe to fish by the break wall in the buffalo harbor? If so is there walleye action in the evenings?

too much current in the gaps to get outside the wall as far as I'm concerned. Especially now, maybe later in the season with a buddy.
