they are a great bait.  From what i read you need a fresh oily fish alot of people trap them but i dont think they are in the north east.  and they are eating them not using them for bait.  I made my own trap with hardware clothe and cable ties  for about 6.00  so its not expensive.  if you do try it good luck and let me know how you do.

When I fish the merrimack in hooksett I just turn over the rocks along the shore and pick them up and put them right on the hook, the smallies love them!

Trapping small ponds for shiners, I usually get alot of crayfish. Always trying new spots , I trapped this tiny deep pond  and between 2 traps I caught at least 70 or more of em!

I kill the craws all winter but i'm sure the summer is just as good. try small swampy tea stained ponds. in my experience deeper hole near beaver dams are absolutly killer. i always use a dead sunfish or chub, and bread for bait, both in the same trap.

Geo is on the money here, small tea stained ponds, preferably deep and with sum flow (inlet outlet). I got a spot I found looking for shiners, that with 2 traps and a 24 hr soak with nuttin but drydawgfood , I hauled over 70 crayfish when I returned. Place is tiny but is feed by a swift moving stream and is as deep as it is wide. Crayfish trapping is like minnow trapping- ya gutta try 100 places to find 2-3 killa spots.
