Title: Michiana Shanty 2
Post by: michianafisherman on Sep 16, 2009, 07:27 AM
If you have read my post on the Michiana shanty, you will understand my new one. While sitting in the old one I had plenty of time to think about what I would like different. So I came up with a new Idea. I am making a double wide shanty. I have no Idea if it will even work. I will find out this season. Here are some progressive pictures as I go along.

Thanks. I worked on the sled part for the second side. Its funny how much time little things take. I hope I can get as much use out of this thing as I am putting into it. I can say that I am not in any support groups or anything like em, I seam to be getting my fix from working on my shanty and posting the pictures

That looks awsome, but wouldn't be little heavy on the ICE?? Looks good just becarefull.

Post by: michianafisherman on Sep 17, 2009, 07:23 AM
The whole idea is, that it is not heavy. I am planning on using it by myself when necessary. I figure it will tip the scales just over 200 lbs. But you are right about filling it up with fishermen. I will have to wait for thicker ice to use it to its potential. But I won't be afraid to use it on 4 inches of ice. That's what I am making it for. Thanks for all the nice comments.

I worked on the sled portion on the main part of the shanty. I still need to attach the board, with two bucket holes for the poles, to the top. I may leave the smaller one open for gloves and such, or make a hatch to access the space. Hopefully, most will understand how this shanty works the more picture I post. If you think I am posting to many let me know.  Also: I need to put the tow rope through before I go much farther. I had to wait to see how it balanced out before I new where to put it.

Just a reminder, or thought.....you may want to put some sort of latch connecting the 2 sled fronts so the snow doesnt push them apart tweaking the hinges shouldnt need more than 1 in front and 1 in back if it seems to be a problem, but i could see a bit of snow trying to force the small sled outward tweaking your connector board and hinges.

Post by: michianafisherman on Sep 22, 2009, 07:05 AM
I have been thinking of this also. I thought about making a flap, or a piece of those blue roll up sleds the kids use, then let it hang down over the front to block the snow from going between the two halves. Probably would only need it if the snow was over 4 inches or so.

Post by: Hollywood703 on Sep 23, 2009, 09:55 AM
I was thinking of more like a gate latch....something that kinda locksthe 2 pieces together....yet looks good, one of those flip over latches that go on gates, and the fixed part spins to lock it....hate for you to cover up such artwork with a blue roll up sled :)

Got some wood cut for the walls and made all the windows. Windows are .030 lexan outside and .015 lexan inside, with a 3/16 plexiglass to hold them together. Totaling 3/4 inch thick with the airspace. Very light weight!

Nothing illegal was done in the making of these windows. ::) ::)

So, how much are you charging for the blueprints? This is probably the best portable I think I've ever seen.

Once your done you should post a video of you setting up and tearing down.
Title: Re: Michiana Shanty 2
Post by: michianafisherman on Oct 02, 2009, 06:53 AM
I mostly make them for myself. I do keep some patterns and such, but don't have blueprints. I have been improving my design for years. My first michiana shanty sets up in less than 20 sec. This shanty will be around 40 sec? I will put a video on here for how it works. Right now I am starting the walls and working out all of the funny ways it has to fold to make it work in the wind. I want to be able to load and unload, then push or pull onto the ice, then set up, all by myself. That's the plan. Should have some more pictures next week.

Sorry I haven't posted pictures of the walls. The cold weather is great, but I can't glue my gussets without heat. I may have to try to find some space at work to get things going. I only have to make three more sections of wall and roof frames. Also, I have to build a door. I will try to get some pictures up for the frames before I start installing the R-Board. Hope everyone Else's projects are going well! ;D

I worked on the shanty all day Saturday. I finished the wall frames and built a spar for the roof support. I tried to take pics of the framing but they didn't turn out good enough to make sense of what you would be looking at. Once I start putting the gussets on I will be able to describe the walls better.

This is a pic of the center spar for the roof before I put on the Luann.

A little more progress last night. I got a couple of side walls and the back wall ready for the R-board.

A corner gusset. Square, then glue and staple.
I use a three inch screw in the corner. Pre-drill the hole.

End wall with gussets.

Middle of back wall gusset. This is what you would glue the R-board to.

Back wall with gussets.

Finally got the shanty out of the garage to take a few pictures last night. I have had to take walls one at a time down in my basement to glue and staple because of the weather. I was getting discouraged because of all the time it was taking me to pull the staples the sand each wall individually. It took forever! Then to install the hinges on each wall and figure out how to hinge it so I won't have problems with freezing. Lots of problems solved and lots of time spent it feels good now to be this much closer to taking my family and friends fishing.

Walls up!

This is the door side!

This is the spar I designed to hold the weight of the snow, and install lighting in the bottom. I am also going to install some flashing lights on the top ends.

A Little driveway fishing!

Shanty building is hard work!

My son is tired too!

Folded left side.

Folded right side.

Back of shanty.

It will look a little different with the R-board in the walls. I still have to add on some more gusset strips and make some latches and the door with a latch. I like making my own latches because of cost. I still haven't decided on the kind of a design I am going to print on the sides. Also I am going to fiberglass the bottom. I have never installed fiberglass before so one more thing to learn. I have used Linoleum in the past, but with the foot print of this big shanty the roll of material is too heavy. My smaller shanties used a smaller piece so the weight didn't matter.

Sometimes I wasn't so sure how it would work either! I had a bunch of obstacles to over come with the folding. Still trying to come up with a better way of joining the front two walls without the use of clamps. I can come up with ways of doing it with two people, but I want to be able to set it up by myself? I guess I will have to find some fast clamps that won't freeze up, because they will need to be on the outside.

I , like a lot of others have been watching this thread to see what the final product was gonna look like and how it would work. Kudos on a job well done. Probably took more man hours to think about than to build, combine the two, it`s time well spent.

Thanks for understanding the thinking part! I woke up at 3:00am the other day trying to solve one thing. I THINK THE THINKING AND BUILDING IS ABOUT EVEN! I almost quit working on it Monday. I was getting overwhelmed by all of the time and solving. I thought I will just use my old shanties this year and wait till next year to finish. Tuesday I forced myself to work on it and made good progress. Funny how your attitude changes with a little progress. Now I am excited about getting the thing done.  ;D ;D

You are quite the craftsman, everything looks like it fits tight, nothing looks like it was just slapped together. This looks like it is going to be an awesome piece of work. I cant wait to see the end product........it looks like you could have a nice little get together in that shack, friends or family.  I wish I had that kind of patience. Kudos!

I am going to use R-Board. The gussets or luan are glued onto the 3/4 by 3/4 in a way to make a ledge to recieve the board. I just glue it in. This gives it a frame to attach hinges and is very strong. I am going to print on the walls and roof with a digital printer. I am still trying to decide if I am going with a nice pattern or use some of my digital camera pictures. The inside is going to be printed with a paneling pattern. Better than just leaving it plain and the ink that is used will help seal it better for stains. Here is a sample I had done.

Without printing.

Update; I worked on the door last night. All I need is the hinges installed and to make the latch. I put blocks on the walls where they come together when it all folds up. I get excited every time I fold and unfold the shanty to work on it. I enjoy seeing my ideas in action. Anyway! The weather is suppose to be nice this weekend so I can get it out of the garage an shoot some more pics. I had to make my own clamps to hold the front walls together. I could not find what I wanted in any store or catalog so I made them myself out of some aluminum angle. I'll get pics of those up too. Hope everyone Else's projects are going well also. ;D

I am getting closer to finishing my shanty. I still can't believe how long every little thing takes to do.  I put some Latex paint on the bottom side of both halves. I also started putting the spar varnish on all of the Luann pcs. for the bench and out side bottoms. I still have to do the wall frames with 2 cotes.

I am waiting for the plastic sheet to build the sled part also. That's why it is upside down, so I can put the material on when it gets here.

I finished all of the spar vanish this weekend. I am picking up the plastic for the sled portion tonight. I bought some 1" X 120" runners UHMW and I sheet 4 X 8 polystyrene. I should have it put on so I can put up some more pictures this week before Thanksgiving.

This is a picture of the roof and walls. I had to take them off to get the spar vanish on them.

I have all of the R-board just waiting for the printer to free up.

I want your opinion on something! I have my two man shanty all set up with the camera and Vexilar. Would you take them out for the new shanty or wait until you could afford new ones? That way you could use either one? I am struggling on weather or not to mess up the nice wiring on the two man.

I can't move it to the scale until its printed. I would guess less than three hundred pounds but close to two fifty? I will find out soon enough. The R-board is not glued in yet! I will be taking some pics of the roof printing next. Message for airplanes.

My dad is a pilot also. Cherokee 180

He has a  Piper PA11 cub with floats and skis and a Grumman Cheetah that grandpa bought new back in the '70's
The Grumman would be similar to the Cherokee, low wing 130hp

I was hoping to get some more pics up but I have been waiting for the printer to free up. I could glue all of the R-Board in because I have it all cut, but thats not what I want so I have to wait. I am going to unscrew all of the walls so I can glue the pieces in nice and flat. It will make the walls much stronger, and nicer looking. I didn't print a message on the top, I put a picture of a big shark with some smaller fish swimming with it. More of a joke because you won't be able to see it anyway. I will have to climb onto the roof to get a good picture.

Hope everyone has a Merry CHRISTmas!

Happy New Year! I came in to work on my shanty, the only problem is my battery on my camera is dead. I was able to get a couple of shots of the printed walls.

I still have to peel the protective film off the windows. In Michigan you don't need your name on portable shanties, so I just put my handle for Iceshanty on all four sides.

I did get all of my reflectors on all four corners. I still need to make the latch for the door, that's why you can't see a handle. I wish I could put up some more pics, sorry!

We will see? I have to wait one more day to go fishing and get those pictures of it on some ice. My water pump went out, so instead of fishing all day I am working on the Van and the shanty at the same time. Still should be a relaxing day, I hope! I do have a friend that will fish with me tomorrow. Once I get this shanty going I will probably fish everyday till ice out. I am just glad that the water pump didn't go out on one of my road trips. I sometimes travel 375 miles one way to fish.

Water pump is working, no leaks! ;D  I did some work on the shanty also. made some new latches for the front wall, I didn't care for the bungee cord idea I had. I seam to forget that the last shanties I built took years of refining, or tweaking. I wanted this one to work right the first time out. I see now it is not possible, I am always coming up with better ways to do something and changing things.

I did take it out yesterday ;D ;D ;D  So let me tell you of my first trip.  I got to the lake, found a good place to park with the trailer. I pulled the shanty out and was surprised by how easy it pushed by hand. I had no idea it was going to come in handy later. I hooked up to the four wheeler hooked the sled to the back of shanty and started going out. It was eight degrees but I still ran into a bunch of slush and sank in about 6 or 7 inches. I finally got stuck and had to get off the four wheeler and lift it out of the slush and set it on some harder ice. I moved the shanty over and hooked up again. I might of moved 10 feet and sunk in again. I decided to try to just spin the tires to see if I could make it go, even if it would be slow going. As I was spinning the tires, I got it to move about three foot, then I looked down at the left wheel spinning, and it just stopped turning. I thought I may have snapped the chain, or broke something else, but it was the tubeless tire that came off the bead. Now I am about 40 or 50 yards off shore and I am not going anywhere. I disconnected the four wheeler and was able to let it run by itself and headed back to the van to put it back in. Then I walked back to the shanty and pushed it another 300 yards out by hand. It wasn't too bad the snow was maybe an inch deep. I don't think I would want to push it too far in 4 inch snow?
So it set up quick. I was worried about heating a larger shanty so I used two 2 mantle lanterns. I sat in a T-shirt most of the day. If was awesome! ;D ;D  Better than I thought it would be ;D The only other thing that messed up was my camera battery was dead. So no video yet! I only took three pictures :(
Here is the Grand Opening Picture of me standing with my shanty. There were 15 to 20 guys on the lake, and not one came over to check out the shanty. Funny isn't it?

It sure was worth the wait ;D ;D

One other thing. I thought the large door would be a problem opening and closing letting all of the heat out. It didn't hurt a thing, I could open it, then close it and it would warm right back up again. I am glad I made a bigger door now!

That is one heck of a Cadillac shack!! You go my vote very great craftsmanship. Glad to see someone still takes pride in there work. How well do your shanties handle going over uneven and unlevel snow and drifts. Have you had them tip over while pulling them. What do you do if you have sagging ice with water on top after drilling. This is a problem I have just encountered and had to make a 6" box to keep my feet out of the water there is 14" of ice 2' of snow has this effect. I've been working on my shanty to remake for next year if its ok with you i would like to use some of your ideas on the reman of my shack. Any advice on some problems possibly through the spring and summer would be greatly appreciated.

First let me answer some of your questions. The uneven snow issue is a problem for most shacks. It take a little common sense to motaite across the bumps or hills encountered. I have used this type of shanty for years, and I am still learning. The way it folds, the walls are exposed to sideways objects. As long as your are pulling straight it will ride over anything, or up and down hills.
I will be honest, I have had my two man ones blow over in high winds while towing. I did learn that if I put my two man shanties bottom to bottom, (had to make the sled on opposite side) I then had no problem with the wind or tipping. Pulled two of them down the road to the lake once, about 2 miles with a friends Polaris Ranger.
I pull both with a 125 4 wheeler. The one you are looking at has a wider track and has not tipped over yet. I only used it two times though, but I don't think it will.
I made my shanty to sit on top of the snow to eliminate the problem of the water. I don't shovel out a place, I sit on top of the snow. My floor is only on 2x2's   which are one and a half inches thick. the flooring is plywood five sixteenth inch thick.
When you get ready to fix yours up I will help if you need it!

Believe it or not my Van broke down again. I couldn't fish all weekend :'( I did some work on the shanty in the driveway. Made good use of the time off. Hooked up wires and my electric equipment. I made some lights using 12 volt 50 watt bulbs from Walmart. Less than two dollars each. I ended up taking all of the camera and wiring out of the old shanty.
Should get the van running tonight, my parts are in. special order. Be on the lake by the middle of the week. Hope everybody else is fine.

I mounted the camera to be removed, because crappie fishing at night I don't use it.

I was mounting it this way but the wires and battery were bugging me.

Was nice to fish the night bite. Couldn't break the 9 inch size bracket. :'( Next time! ;D

Thank you for noticing. Several of my friends and acquaintances have told me I should build them and sell them. But I am an Icefisherman first. I don't want to build when it is time to fish. I am also a Cancer survivor. So I know that time is precious. I have seen to many guys die before anyone knew how they did what they did. Keeping their secrets with them to the grave. I decided to help other fisherman to have a better outlook on their hobby, and share my ideas with the world. I have had some even say that my ideas are patentable. So what! I am not going to lose sleep over someone steeling am idea or two. I could be dead by then? No man knows his hour. Lord willing this won't be my last shanty anyway.  Thanks all!

Did you see my windsock? I put a light on top. I used one of those driveway (solar rechargeable) kind. I found them at Lowe's for less then five bucks each. I also put one beside the door. I just toss them in the bucket when I am done fishing. I have to pull the batteries out if I leave them in the dark, so I have been leaving them to light up at night by the kitchen sink window.

OK. I am going fishing in the AM I will have pictures Monday Morn for the Ultimate Shanty. I also would like to post a video. Folding Up or down. Do I paste it the same as a picture? Or do I have to do it different? I tried one the other day and it didn't work :'(

For the video, just paste a link to the page it's on.
When you go to post to the board click on the little picture of the earth above the smilies on the posting form. This will create opening and closing tags in the reply form. Paste the URL between those tags.

I'm not sure how to embed the video in the page here.

I also put a light on top of the pole for the windsock. I found the windsock at a flea market. The pole is from a banner stand.

A few pictures from last weekend.

I have some more video, but its on another new camera and I need to figure out how to download. My computer says I can only use one camera at a time? I will figure it out and put them up as soon as I can.

I hope this explains the operation better. I know that it was confusing to most about how it all came together. Now that I know how do some video I can answer you questions easier. ENJOY! ;D

Very nice portable,I have one question once you have the shack set up can it be moved from one place to another without folding it down? We move around until we find the fish, maybe 4 or 5 times an outing.

It takes time to move. Depends on what you brought with you. If you set up the table and you TV and DVD player and lanterns and settle in you won't feel like moving. If you only take the basics, it doesn't take much to step out, fold it down, and run and gun. I have moved a few times, but I seem to settle in too tight and enjoy my creation and the cabin feeling on ice. I am also seeing fish on the camera so that's another good reason to stay put. If I was to move allot I would take fishing poles bait and lanterns. I could move fast that way. You could slide it without folding it up, but the walls would be shifting and adjusting to the levelness of the ice and snow. Not really made for that kind of abuse. The amount of time it would take to fold it up or down would be the best way to do it. Its made to slide on the sled part. I also make a two man that would do what you want, as long as there is not much snow. If there is snow you need the sled. You can see it under Michiana Shanty. In the Ice shack tips.

Thanks all for the nice comments on my shanty. My hard work and thought paid off. I won the ultimate shanty contest for the best permanent shanty. That is good to me because I wanted the flag instead of a T-shirt. I will be fishing all weekend in it. Taking a road trip north about 275 miles. Meeting up with a bunch of guys from Iceshanty on Higgins lake. Will update with some pictures when I return.

The bad thing is?  While fishing this weekend I got some ideas for a new shanty :o Now do I take the time to work on number 3 ???? Or do I draw up something on my first two designs? My mind is stimulated by problem solving new designs. I need to let someone else make the plans while I work on the next. I only have so much time for one or the other. I still can't believe I was able to build this #2 shanty in one summer. The next one will take longer, I think?

Was nice to see all of you guy's on Higgins. Great weather for the event. My friend got sunburnt ;D ;D

Thanks for the offer. My son is the engineering club president. He knows CAD. I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings using someone else to draw the thing up. He is about to graduate this year. Just did his pictures an cap and gown stuff. Once he's finished with the school work I am going to put him to work drawing up shanties. I hope it will help with his college fund. And boost his confidence knowing he had a part in it. Thanks!  I am going to tell ya, I am going to start a Michiana Shanty 3 Post soon.

I have never froze it to the ice. It will stick if you stay out long enough, but I painted the bottom with Latex Paint so it comes up easy. The shanty is only sitting on 2x2's. The 2x2's are glued and screwed onto the plywood then the Luann goes across both for the sides. The 2x2's can't come off. My friend one time kicked wet snow all around the bottom and I had to chip away to get to my hand holds and the use a spud to pop it loose, but other than that no problems.

This two man is easier to see the bottom and how it sits on the 2x2's. See how I staggered the 2x2 at the corners so I have someplace to lift it off the ice. This small one weights less than two hundred pounds. The michiana shanty 2 weighs 332 pounds so I can still lift it loose from the ice by myself.

I had to put supports on the floor of the michiana 2, so I cut them smaller so they don't hit the ice. Only the outside of the shanty holds the weight.

I notice that you use a lantern to heat the shack.  Is this the only source of heating you use and how does it perform?  I am hoping to use a lantern to heat the shack that I am going to build but would like to know how well it will work first.
Title: Re: Michiana Shanty 2
Post by: michianafisherman on Sep 22, 2010, 05:32 AM
Yes I only use lantern heat. Because the shanty folds and has many places for a little air to come in I am not too worried about carbon monoxide. The small one was fine with one lantern, but the large 8X8 I use two when its close to 0 degrees. If you have a shack that is sealed and insulated one lantern will run you out. Meaning too hot. That's why I make a door latch that holds the door open a little to regulate the heat. Make sure it holds it open so the wind isn't driving you crazy from the rattle. I also fish at night quite a bit, so the light is a bonus. If you make a lantern box, you can move the light and heat around your shanty where needed. The box is my second heat source, my first is built into the bench. If I get too hot I turn off the box lantern.

The box works good for holding a rod, warming up a sandwich, drying out wet gloves, holding some tackle, and for walking around and scouting out and around the shanty. A bonus is, it is hard to break a globe while it is in the box and I don't have to worry about the kids or others burning fishing line, fingers, or expensive coats an the hot lantern. And buy the way, make sure you use the two mantel type. The single mantel doesn't put out enough heat.

Sweet setup! I can't wait to see what you come up with #3.

How about that lantern box? I've never seen anything like that before. I'm guessing that's another home made jobber? It looks like it has a second compartment in the back of the lantern. What do you use that for and do you have any issue with the plexiglass melting in the front and does the lantern fit pretty snug inside?

I sent you a PM.

Number 3 is in the drawing stage. No pushing, dragging, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, or folding. I kind of like making them fold up, but the next one will be wheelchair usable. Trying to take my idea and lessen the cost of certain places to make it accessible to most. Cheaper than a four wheeler or sled and yet able to go anywhere, anytime. And not like a Snowbear at 30,000 dollars plus.

This is an amazing piece of work.
Could you tell me how the folding walls attached to the base?
Are those long white strips hinges or are the wall floating?

All of the walls are on hinges. I buy the piano style hinges and then cut them myself about 4 inches long. Just long enough that two existing holes are in each hinge. The white strip is some high quality duct tape for a seal from the wind. I left enough room for snow and ice so its not restricted in any way from folding. If you look close at the picture, you can see the shadow of the hinges through the tape. I think I only used four on the eight foot wall. Two on the four foot walls. And I used the small screws that came with the hinge to hold them on.

Just to update the post and tell all who are viewing the build from Maker Faire. Thanks for the nice comments. I hope you were inspired to build something yourself. Hope to meet some of you on the ice this coming season. If not, I may see you at the next Maker Faire Detroit? I know that over 1000 kids know how to ice fish, but I can't take them all, I need a little help making that happen. So get those kids to the pond or something.

Hey Michiana I've been checking out your youtube videos/pictures on the shanty, I realize this is an old thread and what not but I had read through out your build that you were having your son make a cad program for the blue prints on this shanty.  I was curious if this ever happened and if the blue prints are for sale?  I am very interested in this design seeing how I have little storage room at my condo and the slim design would fit awesome and it's a great build.  Awesome progress and ingenuity thanks for sharing!!

For everyone's info, I have never sold one shanty or plans! I was planning on doing a step by step build before this season, but my garage roof needed to be completely redesigned. I spent my summer building roof trusses, in place, one at a time. I also bought a rare electric car that I couldn't pass up. I hope to still do a step by step build and believe me, I felt like I let allot of people down not getting it done yet.

I bought my granddaughters a Barbie Dreamhouse, so you know what I put together for my Christmas. After trying to figure out the plans and all the pieces, I got to thinking. If I am smart enough to do this, and I am struggling with the plans, How does the regular moms and dads build a dollhouse?  I still think the best bet is to show step by step videos of the build. Then no excuses for not being able to finish one.

Would love to see framing plans/instructions for this. Realistically I could probably copy based on the images you've provided but I like having that added information for padding, haha. Even drawings would be appreciated with some dimensions. If the universe aligned a step-by-step photo guide or sketch-up would be amazing :D Love the inventiveness of this project!

Because of the different dimensions of the supplies available, depending on where you live, it is very difficult to give proper measurements.
For instance the wall board I used. Even I cant find the same stuff anymore with all of the chain lumber stores disappearing.
I would recommend that you make a model from some stiff cardboard and see if you can make it fold properly, then you will have a good idea how to make yours.
Some guys have made my 2 man version, and the video on youtube just pasted 200,000 views last month. I haven't seen anyone make the Michiana 2 yet, although some have said?
As always I will answer any questions and offer a seat in my shanty to anyone.
