What's your best guess.
« on: Oct 28, 2010, 05:39 PM »
Where will there be fishable ice first and when.  It's getting close now!

I hope to be on Georgetown by thanksgiving.

In SE MT, the smaller ponds and the back bays of the larger reservoirs freeze up first.  The last couple years or so we have gotten an arctic blast after Thanksgiving (which is unfortunately too late to help the hunting) which made for fishable ice around the first week in December.

I don't mess with the thin ice, even though the fishing can be outstanding.  I like to have at least 6" or so of clear ice before I'm comfortable.  So that to me is what I call "fishable".

4-6" OF ICE AT HELL CREEK BY NEW YEARS ???  AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I'M HOPING FOR!  HORSESHOE BEND ON YELLOWTAIL - 10" BY THAT TIME.  AT LEAST IN THE PAST ANYWAY, BUT FROM THE LOOKS OF THE FORECAST OF 60'S ALL WEEK, KEEP PRAYIN' FOR AN ARCTIC BLAST!  THIS 'HEAT' IS NOT HELPING THE HUNTING OUT ANY EITHER!  :%$#!:  GOOD FISHING - OH

My experience has always been the first week of december if you are willing to go up to the mountain lakes  ;D.  Lower elevations are usually xmas  :(  Last year we were fishing december 1st up Hyalite with 8" of good ice.

I rode my bike to work on Thursday and passed a puddle that had ice on it. The avelanche report has been sent out a few times already. High mtn lakes should be good to go not too much longer.

waiting for the ice is like being a kid waiting for Christmas... I have sharpened the auger, put new line on the poles, cleaned sorted and tinkered with all the gear, and watch eht weather report waiting for the cold.

On the radio today at work, John Paluski said it will get to 8 degrees at Georgetown Lake tonight.  That will make some ice.

Also have seen ice covered stock ponds today.

Last year I was on good ice at Houser on the 8th of December. I would really like to see that happen again this year and am really hoping the weather man is correct with the predicted lows for next week.
