Title: Kezar Lake
Post by: FishingPhil on Jan 21, 2013, 08:57 AM
Fished up at Kezar Lake this passed weekend. Few good togues, bunch of small salmon as well. One of the togue threw up 2 large skinny bait fish, about 8-9" long. Almost look like alewives.  Interesting to say the least.

There are a ton of Smelt in Kezar. Some of them get pretty big.

Just posted some pics after figuring out how to do so. Not sure if they are smelts. Bait shop thinks they are alewives or herring that might of been stocked?

The fish that came out look completely different from the smelt I buy at the bait shop. Are there different versions of smelt? I did reuse one of the part digested bait, but no luck ;-)

Thanks for the compliments, hopefully more big fish this season. There was 5-7" of black ice. Quads and snowmobiles on the ice. Should be back out there in 3 week or so. Unless Jordan's Bay freezes over in the next 3 weeks

out in front of rattlesnake island? I live on the west shore.

Yup! I set up on the north side of rattlesnake island since people were already set up off the point. There is a shelf that goes from 40-88 feet that I was set up on. Yes it's deeper right off the point but people were there already. Good luck! I'll be back in a few weeks

I'm not concerned one bit. If I can help someone catch more fish then so be it! I don't own the lake.  If people catch and release it's all good. These fish are constantly on the move. I dont understand why people are so tight lipped on here. We should work together  not against each other

There are some huge togue in that Lake. I Saw a picture  from 2 years ago of a 30"laker. When he cleaned it He found a 10" salmon in its stomach. What a pig.

Nice looking healthy lakers.  The smelts are large, and were obviously healthy until encountering brother laker.

I've been staring at this picture of the two baitfish for awhile. The fish has an elongated upper jaw, an upward oriented eye, and it also has a dark lateral line. Very dace like traits. I know Kezar does not list it but that bottom baitfish has to be a dace, probably a monster black nose or a pearl. Or it's a longnose sucker with its mouth at a relay funny angle.

The top fish is a smelt, no doubt.  You must be referring to the bottom one.  I can't tell from the picture whether the jaw is supposed to be that way or has been messed up through being eaten, smashed, or partially digested.  The dark line on it actually looks like dark muscle (the same line of dark meat you find on most fish right along the skin) rather than a dark line of scales on the outside of the fish.  Based on the apparent subterminal mouth and the slightly robust body, I would suspect that it is a fallfish.

I never thought that we might be looking at a fish without skin. Its really annoying me that we can't figure out what that fish is in the bottom of the pic. I accept that theres a chance that it might be a fallfish, but the gill plate doesn't have me convinced, the whole head and body shape look more streamlined and tighter than a chub. I change my vote to it being bigfoot. I'll never figure it out based on this pic.
