Thinking about ice fishing Lake Sunapee at least once this season. I've heard mixed reviews of the fishing there. Any suggestions? Where to go, What to use for bait etc?
1st post on the NH board!!! Thanks Mods!! ;)

I've only ice fished that swamp once. We were fishing for lakers...We went on the ice off of rt103 and fished neer great Island...
I dont remember catching any fish... :-\

Fished it growig up and I dont ever remember catching anything out of there either.

The lake is on the rebound and doing very well. Some very nice lake trout were netted by fish and game a few years back. There are some monsters in there. You probably have just as good a chance catching a big one there as you do winni. A lot of people rave about winni's lake trout.... and dont get me wrong it is loaded with them and they are healthy fish. but if its a trophy your going after, I would hit winnisquam, newfound, sunapee, or even squam before winni. If you look into it I think you'll find winnisquam produces some of the largest lakers but the fish can be fewer and far between than winni. I've had many 15+ fish days on winni in the 19-23in range! great fight no matter what size though! I cant wait to get out on the ice again and slam the lakers!

I know of a couple lakers that were taken last winter off Sunapee that were over 10lbs.

In the past two years i got a 9 pound laker and a salmon that went five and a quarter (trolling)....its not fast and furious but they are in there

Never fished over there because it was pretty much general knowledge in the ice fishing community here in NH that it would be a waste of time. Have friends who fished it in the warmer months and did poorly. If you want big fish Winnisquam's the place to go, just have to remember Martel's is no longer open (can you believe that!) so you have to stop at the store at Mosquito Bridge for bait.
-
:o Martel's is closed? What happened. Where have I been? Oh yeah, hunting imaginary deer. Are they really closed?

I googled this. I guess I've been in lala land for the last few months.

Just E-m the author, waiting to
here hear ::) if he has further update

I can see the guy with 400 bucks worth of certificates getting a little ticked, but for the guys whining about 10 and 20 bucks thats a little selfish, guys having a rough time as it is losing the store im sure people whining about 10 dollars worth of terminal tackle isnt going to make him feel a lot better.
that sucks, I hate seeing tackle shops closing, my old town lost both its nice tackle shops, and they were both replaced by firkin dry cleaners!!

It was a common thing to hear "I stopped by Martel's" on the ice for as long as I can remember. That store has some history and it is a shame it is gone!
-
Rumor has it, the owner of the building is activley looking for someone to reopen as a tackle shop as it was before. Mabey as soon as dec. 1
-
No more Martel's but then, William sold the business some years ago so it really wasn't Martel's anyway!! I see some signs of life there but nothing encouraging enough to think it might reopen before the ice sets up.
-
You're right Duck Doctor, it is a shame to see a place with that much history go down the drain, it just ain't the same anymore down there on the lake. I can remember stopping there for bait with my dad in the late 50's and early 60's and stand in water while William netted out the bait.

Neal, according to the article the guy that was just in there was a Lawyer. I doubt he's hurting. Looks like it was in his girlfriends name, they musta split so he stopped making rent payments, maybe to get back at her , who knows. It does suck though. It was my favorite stop when fishing that area. Hope someone else occupies soon. Wish I could but thats a hell of a commute.
