A bit off-topic but...
I've heard of some lakes having a contest to see who can guess when the ice will go out.
They make a contraption and put it on the ice and it has something that eventually falls through the ice and it records the day and time.
I'd like to make one for our lake but I can't figure out how. And I haven't been able to find any solutions online.
Anyone here familiar with one?
I'd say that my biggest problem is the timer. How to keep that running and how it would record the drop?

Paint a cinder block orange & aim a trail cam at it. Or bore a hole stand a log in it upright & do the same.

Trail camera should work. Why didn't I think of that? ???
Thanks!

That's a great idea! I never woulda thought of that, either!

I even got one of those fancy ones this year that sends pics to my phone so I don't have to go out and check it and stink up my deer woods.
It'll be perfect for the ice out contest.

Is this supposed to set off the trail cam when it drops?

Yes. And record the date and time.
