anyone tried this fly or a variation through the ice for perch? the fish i caught yesterday were full of invertibrates that looked very similar to this fly. if you do do you tip it with any bait? what size fly do you fish?
thanks and tight lines.

I don't fish flies under-ice but I may start! I don't see why something like a litte beadhead or P-tail wouldn't work!

I read an article recently and I can remember which mag it was in?..But it was about tightlining and using a fly about a foot or so up from your weight/jig...It sounded like a good idea and I have had the best intentions to dig out the old fly box and tie on one

no great shakes in my opinion. did catch some perch and gills on them. but they didn't do nearly as well as the teardrop and eye. managed a 21 in. pike on a size 14 copper john variation i had on. will leave some on though since they aren't really in the way and do catch some fish.
tight lines.

A few times this saeson, I fished a Pheasant Tail variation (16,choc lab fur, soft hackle, copper beadhead) about a foot above several different jigs and spoons. Caught mostly gills, but some perch on the bottom, but none on the fly, which really was a surprise, cause it is he## on trout. This must work, cause on my home lake (known for large perch) some perch specialists always have a rig set up with a wet or dry fly 12-18" above a lure. Guess more testing will be done next year. Keep an open mind, as perch eat a large variety of insects, fish, etc. Have seen them belch up little pink worms, so a San Juan Worm might be worth a try in that case.

On special occasions, a fly is the only thing a perch will bite on. If you know the fish are down there but there just not taking your bait, take the hook off a swedish pimple and tie on about 12-18 inches of line. Then put a fly on under the pimple. It'll turn those lookers into takers. The pimple will work as an attractor and a weight to get your fly down there. Use a smaller fly, #10 or #12. Good luck.

well we did have a day that they only hit the p-tail. only they were all largemouths. and that was the only thing that they would take. my dad caught some REAL nice largemouths on it.
they will catch fish, just not all the time, and remain in the mix.

I tie P-tails and several other patterns right on a 1/64 ounce gold or silver painted jig head some times use 1/32 as well. I have caught fish on them but seem to do better with shad darts in 1/32 size.
