ice conditions
« on: Feb 08, 2023, 05:45 AM »
The newly formed black ice as a result of that fast deep freeze we had is in good condition most places 4-8".
However, those places where there was ice, then several snow loads on top that melted/froze and has new snow on top, well that ice is punky and has soft spots, so everyone beware.
It might be 8" thick at glare ice, but the next step on to snow pack covered ice might only be 3-4" thick of snow ice under it.
BE CAREFUL!

Thanks for the update Mudchuck. We went to Maquam shore yesterday and were pleasantly surprised to find that there was 6 " of solid black ice. Not so happy about the bite though. Only caught a few small perch.
