"L" Ice Blues for pannies, inexpensive and work well. Not sure that rod weight matters all that much. Being able to sense the bite, whatever your technique/set up preference is all that matters in the end

I have 2 super ul rods and 2 light rods i use for gills. The super ul ones are great, and i picked them up at the baitshop for i think 9$ each.

Saving up for TB Quiverstick. Broke a TB Sweet Thing years ago and haven't found a better gill rod to date...

I have two 18" Ultra lite, finesse rods that I really like.  Plus I use spring bobbers that really increase the bite sensitivity.

Sounds like a good combo!

I catch gills on all my rods ranging from UL to a med, though that is a Jason Mitchell with a super light tip. My favorite is probably a St. Croix Legend due to the spring bobber. I modified it (stepped on it) and now it has a little stiffer action than the original UL since I overlapped the pieces and lashed it together. Balance between rod and jig size is crucial; I almost always do some practice jigging at home after I rig up. my best inexpensive rig is a Panfish Popper; though It tends to freeze up (spring bobber) in really cold weather.

I use a 28 in ul St. Croix legend with a spring bobber. Works great for me. Only time I use medium is for walleye.
