Last night I noticed a lot of my tip ups had pretty raunchy looking grease and some had leaked in the summer because they were stored vertically. I took them all apart and relubed, some also needed to be wound with fresh dacron. I was pretty careful with the grease but anyone who has done it knows it's still a slightly messing job. I'm wondering what if any effect that grease residue would have on the dacron or fluorocarbon lines I tied when I still had a little residual grease on my hands.
I know for things like sunscreen and bugspray this can matter to certain species. But I've also heard and read in some trout books that things like WD40 are actually excellent masking scents because of the size of the molecules or something
Then again all these things are hydrophobic anyway and will repel the water...
I don't think it matters much to most fish, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience or thoughts here.
