Ice Prevention
« on: Feb 23, 2014, 05:30 PM »
For you guys out there running Jaw Jackers or something similar, any cures for not having the mechanism freezing up? We probably missed a dozen fish today because the latch had been tripped but the trigger hadn't let the pole loose because it was froze in place. Thought about spray graphite or low temp grease or waterproofing spray.... ideas?

Thanks,
Doug

Not to be a smart a$$ but keep them dry.  I've tried a few things and taking an extra second to move it away from the hole when i set the hook on a fish has worked the best.  Mine doesn't seem to mind getting snow on it but when a fish splashes it's game over.

Don't think that would work seen how 14 degrees it starts 2 freeze. Try rubbing a little tip up grease on it.
I know its not a for sure but better than cooking oil.

I have some low temp lithium grease for my sled I'm going to try next time out. And I agree keeping it dry as much as possible but it doesn't always happen haha

Vegetable oil will freeze eventually, but will continue to repel water when frozen (that's the goal).  It's chemical makeup is entirely different than water and therefore won't "stick" things together solid like frozen water does.  The advantages of using it are that it is incredibly inexpensive, you've probably already got some at home, non-toxic and biodegrade (fish friendly).  I'd say give it a try, if it works... Great.  If it doesn't, then try something else.   Trial and error is the best way to go.
