Cool pics. I have a question about spearing. I was told by a guy that while spearing he usually only gets about one fish per season. Is it true that the success rate is really that low? I know things will vary day by day but how many fish do you average per trip?
Thanks
WT
There have been times I have limited out on pike in just a matter of 3-5 hours spearing. Spearing is like any other type of fishing; if the fish aren't moving, it will be a slow day. I was spearing one day, and there were constantly 4-5 fish through the hole every 2-3 minutes. It was harder trying to figure out which one to spear than it was to spear them.
Thanks for the info. I have never had much interest in spearing because of what he said but now I think I will check it out.
Besides kokes I've caught LOTS of trout on them through the ice, and perch (usually hogs)and lmb.
I do`nt know if it`s ok to start this or maby this is something one of the moderators would have to do but thought some pics from around the state would be nice.please lets keep it to pics, only.
Thanks for the info. I have never had much interest in spearing because of what he said but now I think I will check it out.I used to do some spearing back home had lot of until 1 day me and my brother were out in thehsanty havin a few beers and some hot damn( was a slow day so had a few to many i think ) when a muskrat flew up out of the hole landed on my boot.Kind of scared the crap out of me and outthe door i went to bad i took the whole wall with me.ended spearing for that yr
Rain or shine, sleet or snow we get 'er done!!
Those are some nice Kokes Nonya!Neptune...try Bitterroot Lake near Marion....good average sizes there.
Wish I could find some that size around here....
Neptune...try Bitterroot Lake near Marion....good average sizes there.
I was down there about 3 weeks ago rrfish. I limited but the biggest was 11"...nothing to write home about...I was working in Libby the last couple weeks and talked to a guy that owns a sports bar there and he said he catches rather large Kokes there a lot. Rather large being 2-3 pounds, which is on average a bunch bigger than what is available at the reservoir in Helena where the average is 1.2 pounds.
Have you had any luck at Park Lake? I lived near there and fished there as a kid. I used to catch grayling with spinners in the summer.I saw some cutthroat and grayling on the fish cam, Only caught grayling, and only 3, but we weren't fishing hard, and barely got set up and then broke down and left. so stinking cold.
Helena Holding Reservoir, Sunrise last Saturday 1/3/09.
New to site. ::) Where did the ling come from? They are probably my favorite through the ice, but not too easy to find.Hey, Welcome to the site! I think the couple ling pics on here I've seen came from CF near Helena.
Do you Montana guys specifically go after yellow perch. In Maine we never really target them, actually they are a fish no one like to catch at all. Are they good eating?no the taste like !!!@ so if you catch alot of them clean and pack in dry ice send them to montana and I will personally dispose of them into some peanut oil that i just happen to have

PerchHogSlayer,
Just giving you a hard time. And it does look similar to Black Sandy. Totally agree on the photos, nice!
I've got a cabin a little ways upstream from the photos so I go by there about a thousand times a summer so I've got a slight advantage on you. The way you've been pulling perch out this year, you ought to give Holter a try. Can be really good if you find the right school. Or it can suck like anywhere else if you can't.
Chris
Those two fellows in your last picture there perchhogslayer look like some real studs. Hahayour kidding, was that you? or someone you know? thought it looked like a cool picture is all. they asked us how the fishing was, but we had just got there, didn't stay long after that either.
ha ha yeah i'm the guy on the rightThats a real nice perch! looks like you guys dropped something on the ice?
The hardside was almost structure on the lake bottom this weekend
Oh ya know, the usual big flashy stuff....Big piles of money and fast cars. They took a little enticing but when they decided to go for the bait they hit it hard!!

I'm counting over 15 so it couldn't be Canyon Ferry. Could I get some lessons too?
Thanks, we had a lot of fun. Her "biggest" one was about the length of her index finger. The minnow she was using for bait was bigger than than the slimer was. ;D :icefish:
Weighed her 4 times on a digital...got from 19 to 21lbs... Seems these kind of pics/claims always get disputed. I don't want to argue or fight about it. Believe what you want. I'm over 6'2" tall if that's any reference for you. She was just under 40", fat as a pig, w/ a full belly...I hope you put that one back to make more pike that size. Too many ppl keep them just to kill them. Nice fish tho

Great fish, heading up this morning to try Noxon myself. Do you guys keep all your bigger pike? I usually keep a few in the 2-5lb range, but after that they all go back unless they are going on the wall. Those big spawners are important in the health of the fishery, and it's tough to grow 20 lb + fish if you kill them when they are 12lbs. I see the same thing with trout, Browns lake turns out tons of nice trout, but could produce numbers of fish in the 10lb class if some of the mid class fish were put back (lots in the 4-6 lb range). Nothing against harvest, I love to eat fish and try go bring home some meat every time I go out, but thin we could turn out a few more BIG fish with selective harvest. Maybe a idea for a new thred. Good luck and tight lines.
The perch fishing was pretty slow, but they were all good sized. Got a two-fer-one deal w/ the pike though, and she had already skinned this one for me.. ;)haha thats funny i just pulled one out of a lake trout exactly like that!! haha
(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c165/sneno/FISH/pike007.jpg)
Honestly, most fish I catch go back. I fish a TON for large/smallmouth bass in the summer, and I haven't (to my knowledge) killed one yet. I don't do a lot of pike fishing, but I catch a few, and the big ones normally get a free pass back to the water. This one was a special case for me, and I did feel a little bad about it, but she sure tasted DAMN good. Fed my family plus company one night last week. In fact, it was so good, it convinced my buddy that ate w/ me that he's now going pike fishing w/ me...(= See.....she didn't die in vain. ;D
[/quote
Sounds like we are on the same page. I bonk a couple of big fish a year (hooked deep or if they really stand out in some way) and feel a little bad about it. Your still harvesting selectively and putting back more mature fish than your taking. I've just seen pics of stringers of pike in the teens out of that lake and wonder how big they would get if more of those fish went back, ya know:).

A buddy and I went out today and had the best day of perch fishing(catch rate - not size). I personally caught around 200 perch and my buddy caught close to 100 to 150. The biggest was 11 inches. We ended up only keeping a small number so we didn't have to fillet them for days(and the pic would have looked something like Fish to Live's pile of perch :o). I probably threw back 30 - 50 good eaters and the rest were tiny.

This is a separate day and body of water too - pic of the biggest pike I caught so far on the western side of the state - just over 5lbs. Not big but was still fun to catch

Here are is over 700 perch from eastfork res from lewistown tourney, my freezer has lots of meat
(http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu106/m1000snowman/IMG00052-20110116-15211.jpg)
why don't you come fish next to me ;D ;D
Bowhtr, a question if you will.
I can remove each side of a perch leaving the rib cage on the body and then remove the skin.
Now I have two nice fillets with the tiny "y-bones" or extra ribs in the meat.
I can't seem to get those out of the fillet. No technique.
Can you describe the way you clean them?
keepers that mite not happen till next lewistown derby ;) ;)
fish to live want your opinion on eagle food versus windshield wiper lube works good below 0 above is alittle sticky tell the little guy to leave some for me
FUNNY one this iceholer!!!! By the way thanks for showing us the good spot, Too bad we showed you up on your own lake!!rub it in rub it in never again will you win  @)
ya I thought you were low, don't show every one my trick, did u see it before you got in or down the road?
one of my fishing partners told me they had seen your pickup in the parking lot and informed me that someone had left me a present. You ready for the tourney
What is it and how big?
thats funny I caught a rainbow that was 23" but 18" around it weighed 9lbs and looks good on the wall
Well...all I had with me was a "De-liar" tape/scale, and who know's how accurate it is. It's been sitting in my tackle box for 20yrs, so it could be more, could be less...
How do you post pictures here? i have a nice northern pike to share?
thoser are some nice pike soulfly are they 4 lbs?
PM SENT ON PICT'S
Oops...
http://photobucket.com/
Take the fillets and place them so the tail is towards your knife hand with the skin side down (the skin should be removed as you described above). Nest place your knife at a slight angle and cut alongside the y-bone toward the tail of the fillet, at the end of the rib cage angle your knife more into the ribs. You should be left with one clean piece of meat and the other with the y-bones and ribs. If the ribs are thick with meat turn those over (skin side up) and cut alongside the other side of the y-bone until you feel the rib bones, turn your knife angle and cut along the ribs removing a thin piece of meat. I usually do not bother with this as the piece of meat is too small to mess with.Copy this link to your web browser to watch how this is done.
Hopes this helps, I will try to take some pics of this nest time I bring some keepers home; if you are interested in seeing them I’ll post them!
Happy fishing!!!!! :icefish:
what lake were you at
The cat came from a secret spot tho.
nice fish Aaron i thought i saw you yesterday you fish frenchtown pond alott? i didnt know there were fish that big left in the pond think i shall try again
In general, lake trout are highly resistant to Whirling disease.
Nice bass. Were you targeting bass? What did he bite on?I wasn't targeting them but caught two somehow. I was actually pike fishing. I caught it on a jigging spoon made by PK Lures. I've caught five different species on it. They rock!

;)Must just be awful when it takes longer to clean "em than it did to catch them. Way to go!!
nice where you find those
Probably somewhere near Plains I'm guessing. lol
Another way to get blood out of fillets is to soak them in salted ice water. Fill a large bowl with ice top off with water, sprinkle some salt in (it doesn't take too much) put filets in. leave in the water for a few minutes and the water gets pink. Inspect the filets and repeat if necessary. I then freeze filets (in water) in a gallon zip lock bag with just a tad of salt in the water. Make sure the water is over the fish. This prevents freezer burn and you can keep fish for about six months or so this way.

Heck yeah as long as they aren't going rotten. When guys go snagging those are all spawners. Smoked spawner is fantastic.
Ya'll are NUTS! once they go through "the change" they don't taste anything like freshy's and the meat is a weird color...to each his own I guess..
  :sick:tell me you didnt eat salmon eggs on crackersIts the trailer park caviar!
Mooter awesome pike! I had to do a double take because the guy not holding the pike could be the twin brother of a guy I served with in the Marines, the resemblance is uncanny.
The guy not holding the Pike is Mooter!

Someone, someplace in the great state of Montana may have caught this over the weekend.

Was a blast watching the kids try to hook em. Havn't been able to find em for a couple weeks but landed on em yesterday, Think they probably hooked 1 out of every 2 or 3. They were havin a ball. Mom was using a camera in the shack and all day all you heard was the kids yelling theres another one!!! Now theres TWO!!! Funniest part was when standing with my buddies and my 4 year old was sitting on my bucket jiggin and watching my Marcum and yells "Daddy come here I see a fish" She missed it but to see the look on there faces over the fact she knew what she was lookin at was priceless.

We lost every single big pike because we decided to go the 30lb. flouro route instead of steel leader! I have 30 feet of 20lb. "Toothy Critter" on the way. That won't happen again.
my last trip to peck I was broke/bit off twice with 40 lb seagar fluoro leader. should of just stuck to my titanium leaders :-\
Camo is SUPPOSED to make someone hard to miss. ;D
Where can you find those malin leaders without having to order them?
Derek that is a really nice bass my friend!thanks mike, was tempted to get it mounted but decided to let it eat sunfish instead
Beast bobo!!! Nice work!

It touched 14" and the digital scale we had read a bit over 2 lbs...she is still swimming today. Maybe catch her during the derby;)

Lil' cat my oldest caught this weekend! Not bad!
Thanks fellas! It was a trip dreams are made of! Hag, it was on a live minnow setup. Sorry but it was at Notellum Lake. 8lb test line, had a long fight and a heck of a time getting that head through the hole! Released to thrill someone else.
Sorry but it was at Notellum Lake.
I can't ever seem to find this "Notellum Lake" where these guys catch all these great fish! LOL
How much over 2 lbs the state record is only 2.38 lb (2lb 6 oz) it was only 14.35 in (14 in 4 in)
I caught a perch in lake Helena in the summer a couple years ago that weighted 2 lb 4 oz
I drove so fast to get it weighted, I always wondered if it could have lost 2 oz in the drive
Lol, alright guys. If anyone wants to pm me I will give the location of where Notellum Lake was on that particular weekend and what to look for but not "the spot". I've managed to find a spot that'll produce one of these fairly regularly. (like once a year) I don't mind helping out at all, just don't want to be rubbing elbows or flooding the lake with a fisherman gold rush.
I don't need to know where you were cold hole. I was just being silly replying to the upchit creek post. I think it's cool that you found and have a spot like that! Nothin is sacred anymore especially if everybody knows where its at! Good for you and great job on the fish they are nice! Don't take my cantellya post wrong, I didn't post that to guilt you. I'm sorry. I should have thought more before I posted that. That wasn't my intention at all. Keep posting them pics they're awesome!

Fun day on CF
Blue Steel!
thats great. How much ice was there?
Now we know where the shirt is from, how about the fish?I'm gonna go out on a limb and say trr based off the species although there is a couple other places where this combo can be caught
TRR has eyes that big?? Might be worth a road trip. Is there a crappie bite this time of year?Crappie are always biting at the tongue and yes it has some nice eyes as well as nice cats and pike. It can be very frustrating if you're trying to figure that place out. If you're making the trip try to get some solid advise before you devote yourself to the 6 hour drive

Mofish I hope it doesn't piss people off but maybe make them think when they are just about to kill a big spawning female maybe they should let her swim to preserve our fisheries. I keep plenty of walleye, perch and salmon to eat throughout the year but release way more than I keep. I also will not keep a big female winter or summer unless the fish is going to die. I hear all the time that this fish is kept for the wall but in this day and age exact replicas look better and last longer than real skin mounts. I truly believe people just have a hard time releasing fish to give someone else a thrill another day. I don't mean for this to piss people off either but it's my opinion. If more people would practice selective harvest our fisheries would be incredible. Good luck on the water everyone.the bigger the walleye the less the eggs are fertile. Don't say anthing unless you have facts.the smaller ones arethe breeders
This thread is for posting pictures, post pictures or MOVE ON!! If you want to argue about this crap start a thread and see how long before it gets deleted like the last one

Awesome MFish; I notice how those pupils are pointing down in all of those photos, they start to lose this downward pupil very quickly after being out of the water, it is obvious those are not frozen fish! Big thumbs up on careful handling and release, we all now stand at least a chance of catching one of those beauties when they're even bigger! If you ate the perch, we all understand! Sweet pics.

16#,that has to be the most impressive trout we have seen here on IceShanty.I normally do my best not to catch the speckled carp but we don't have anything like that lurking here!
We have a stock pond that has kams in it. They are such an awesome fish to bad fwp doesn't think so. We got one on the wall 24#I got no photo right now I don't brag about the actual fish it was brought in with a pitchfork but it was such a pretty fish it had to be mounted. I will get a pic next time I am at the farm. Kokes are awesome my 5 year old got a 15# on a fly pole. They are amazing fish!
Yes we do! chad stewart is mounting a 14.5lbs rainbow some dude caught at the silos.Any pics of the one out of canyon ferry ?

Awesome time. Those are great fish. I was completely unaware that the record chub is swimming in Hebgen somewhere. :) gonna get the youngest's batman rod out. That thing is a chub magnet! Glad to hear you'll be back for more ice. I've got an extra sled we'll have to do some exploring! Good to see guys getting out with their dads. DH and Redneck you remind me to give thanks to the man that got it all started for me. Nicely done fellas!!
Are they considered game fish??
You need to get an Eagle Claw inline reel that has 2:1 gear ratio and with a push of a button you can drop a 1/64th ounce jig. They're REEL sweat.
Nice ling strippn
Thanks. felt darn good 2 bend the ice rod again.

I'm hoping to get out Saturday but it will just be at a small pond near billings so my chances at something big is slim, mostly be getting small bluegills but there is a chance at a nice largemouth bass. Will be nice to just be on the ice for sure!
Bright out for that kind of action. Nice work Std. Hmm. That just sounds wrong.

Spent three nights at Crooked Creek this last weekend 6th-9th. Great weather, good people and a few nice northerns. Hats off to James at the marina, top notch guy who will help out any way he can. Cant wait to go back! All northerns were on dead bait and the majority hit blue fire brined smelt.

OMG! So trout do eat something other then Bugs. You better send that to trout unlimited and Montana FWP.
[/quote
Yes, trout do eat more than bugs! Small perch is one (from photo), and it was caught on a night crawler, that's #2. Could list several other baits trout will also eat/bite on, but you know as well as I do, trout eat more than just bugs.
As far as telling me where to send these photos (TU/FWP)......... Good Luck.
Enjoy the rest of the ice season, and into open water! I'm done till next ice.
Dude I’m being a complete smart A$$. It’s called sarcasm.
STD - Ya, I know what sarcasm is. My original purpose for posting the photo (wish I wouldn't have now) was that I thought it was kind of neat to see that many young perch in the trout that were in fairly good shape and recently eaten. Maybe it's common for many to see, but it was a first for me. So, I thought I'd share. Oops! And yes, I'm a smartass too! All good on my end, hopefully same for u?
BloodShotP - Most of them were perch. now as far as the partially digested ones, can't say for sure.
Couple shots of first ice for me this season!Nice! JEALOUS!!!

Great season Steve! Thanks, you too. I may see if there's any ice locally that's still safe.
Crappie King indeed...nothing stops me in my tracks like good crappie hauls...best set of crappie pics I've ever seen in montana….the absolute euphoria is evident in your faces.....Thanks guys. Figuring out the bite was tough. That's what makes it so much fun I guess! I have no doubt that next year will be totally different!
Rainball!
Get back what you put in!! These montucky bass are for real!!
Three forks elementary hosted the field trip. I thought it was an awesome idea and was invited by my niece out onto the ice for a couple of hours teaching the kids how to ice fish. She walked away with the first fish caught of the class and the most fish caught! Guess she learned a thing or two from the times I’ve taken her out with me. Every student caught at least one fish, nothing of any size, but still just a fun outing to get the kids outdoors learning something new Montana has to offer

Where do you find that Uncle Bucks?? Don't recall seeing it.It's all that our Cabela's carries now. I think it was a Bass Pro product. I really like it. They had 4 different flavors: Light and Crispy, Mild, Original, and Hot and Spicy, also hush puppy mix, which we tried and it was real good too. I've done the Original which I liked, it had a spicy hint to it, but others thought it was a little much. The Mild was not totally bland, It had a little spice to it too, so that's where I'm gonna stick, at least as long as I'm cooking for everyone. Made it out last weekend to bring a few more fillets home for the fryer. The ice firmed up a bit and it was safe. Fishing was a bit slow, but it was good to get out, and "Social Distance".
Someday, I'm going to get tired of the kid out fishing me . . . but that day is a long way off. 😁
