A failed experiment
« on: Feb 15, 2014, 06:19 PM »
Lost a very nice pike at  the  hole on an experimental rig.  I had heard about old timers using  multiple stands of mono for pike rigs. I decided to try two strands of 8 lb flouro with a circle hook. The idea being, it would help in the extermly clear water of the St. Lawrence. I thought  I'd be able to play the fish then gaf it at the hole.  I was able to play it to hole and just as my buddy goes to GAF it the leader snapped and down went a 10-15# pike. Lesson learned, 50lb flouro leader or steel for now on.

Yep, you can't get that one back  >:(. But after experimenting and realizing it wasn't the answer, it has to be refreshing knowing that when a 20+ pound pike visits , you are more than ready

I put the GAF part in just for guys like you. Don't like gafs don't use them. I prefer to use the tools that the law allows me.

When I go to Maine I kill all the brook trout I catch. They're not but pike snacks anyways.

Pike are very delicious, nothing wrong with it. I actually like gaffs. IMO a fish has a better chance with another hole in its mouth than with a hook in it.

I catch 30 lb pike on a regular basis with no GAFF if you need a gaff for a measly 10 to 15lb pike that is sad use titanium leaders and man up and grab the stupid fish.

I eat lots of pike and if you plan on keeping it then whatever but saying using a gaff and thinking it is acceptable for catch and release is pretty ridiculous if you wanna compare pictures I will smoke ya and never used a gaff, just use titanium leaders like knot2kinky they are very thin and it makes sense sharp teeth cant cut it I used to use strong fluoro but had a really big fish break off so I upgraded to the right tool for the job and I catch a lot of big fish in clear water on titanium.

Seems some of you guys get a little butt hurt  over the thought of gaffs and need  to stoop to questioning my masculinity. I will continue to use a gaff when I feel that it is needed.
