Title: Balaclava
Post by: river rat78 on Nov 27, 2017, 06:16 PM
I haven't seen this discussed at all. Does anyone where a balaclava? I see dickssportinggoods.com has 2 different striker brands. I don't really see a difference in the 2. I was hoping someone here might know the difference.

I started wearing buffs in conjunction with a hat.  The are Super light weight and compact. You can just use them as a neck warmer or tuck them over your nose and ears. Theres not much too them but somehow they make a huge difference even when there is the slightest breeze.

I have one my wife knitted for me. I love it.  I also use it as a scarf by pulling my head through the opening and tucking it into my jacket. Keeps the cold air from going down my neck.

The old time cowboys wore a bandana on their face and sometimes a big old scarf too.     I have a pair of the Walmart baladva's that cost me $9.99 each and every couple of years of usage I throw them away when they seem to wear out and then I go get another one or two.  I use them for work and  play so they do get the use, and from China of course!

I have the one on the bottom. Works great under a snowmobile or atv helmet. That's when I use it most. Warm. Love it.

Tried them. Hate them.  I wear a Mad Bomber hat when it gets real cold. And a neck gator.

Mad bombers are sweet. Especially if they are fur. Warmest hats I’ve ever warn. I also use an Under Armour neck gaitor. If it’s really cold, when I put the neck gaiter on I’ll leave it covering my face then adjust it to fit nicely under my eyes, over my nose, and around the back of my head. Then I’ll put on my bomber and secure the ear flap chin-strap. Put on my polarized sunglasses and my head is fully protected from wind and cold and UV rays bouncing off the ice and snow. Then when I set up my hub I’ll usually just take off my hat and pull the gaiter down around my neck.

I went that route because I the only balaclava’s I could find (I like the form-fitted ones that just cover face and neck) were either extremely cheap material or more than I felt comfortable paying.

What I have been using for years in the Guy Cotton Balaclava. It is a Windproof Fleece that is very warm, thin, made in the USA and retains heat in the wind. It is that many offshore commercial fishermen use in the winter.

Get a new job. Jk

I have the one on the bottom. I love it.  The difference between the two, is the other one can be more versatile. It cost a little more too if I remember right. The middle section that covers the mouth can fold down, not covering your face. So can the top part which makes the whole thing a neck gator. I think it folds into some other configuration as well. The Striker website should have all the info.

X2.  I started wearing buffs two years ago and they are great. Before that I wore bacalavas.

Neck Gator and Bomber hat for me also.  I do have a Balaclava....but not crazy about how it covers the ears so tight.  I do have a very lightweight one for under my snowmobile helmet.....A nice hood on the jacket is good to to keep that wind from blowing down your back...makes me shiver just thinking about it......

I like the Under Armour Infrared Hood (https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/mens-coldgear-infrared-hood/pcid1244401). You can wear it as a balaclava or a neck gaiter.
I also have the Seirus Innovation Neofleece Combo Face Mask and Neck Warmer (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018BJSQC/) which is a great piece of gear for the $$.
Finally, I have a fleece balaclava that can also be worn as a gaiter. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. I probably use the Serius face mask the most since I don't like wearing a balaclava very often.

I use a generic fleece one.  the only time I don't like it is when I'm wearing sunglasses and my breath ends up frosting up the glasses.  I've really only ever used the fleece balaclava or a scarf and prefer the balaclava as it is a lot easier to get it into position and it helps keep me warm even bunched around my neck.

Balaclavas are a must for snowmobile riding or bank robbing.

Are you able to drop it down around your neck and not be uncomfortable?  I am in the market for one, for both ice fishing and skiing.  The only thing that concerns me about balaclava's with the nose piece, is it being rigid and uncomfortable.   Thanks!

So far its fine wearing as a neck gator ...but I have limited ice time with it this season ..there is no fixed nose bar that some turkey masks have..just material .
