Surprise October Snowstorm (October 4, 1987)

The earliest measurable snowfall at Albany, where 6.5" inches fell, with as much as 20" reported in parts of the Catskills. The storm wreaked havoc on the area because it was a heavy, extremely wet snow, which fell on fully leaved trees. Numerous branches and trees were felled...taking down power lines with them, blocking roads and damaging houses. Albany was described as "looking like a war zone." Hundreds of thousands of people were without power...some for up to two weeks. It was the most snow that ever fell during the month of October in Albany.

Same thing happened a couple years ago in buffalo only they got hit with a couple feet of snow. That was around Oct. 4th and lasted till after opening day of bow season (Oct.15th) because I had to go up and work restoring power instead of sitting in my tree stand putting an arrow through the pump station of a buck.

I was awake late that night building a model helicopter, and I remember the Poughkeepsie radio station saying the Catskills might get a few inches.  Woke up at 0700 to the snap-crackle-pop of tree branches breaking everywhere.  The transformer pole in front of our house snapped at the base.  We had no power for ten days, and no phone for two weeks just 3.5 miles outside of the village of Pleasant Valley in Dutchess County.  No school for the first week, either.  Stayed at a friend's farm in Verbank for most of that time, and the number of deer in the fields was unbelievable.

I live just west of Rochester now, and that band actually reached my home in Chili, and petered out by Henrietta.

I tried to go hunting yesterday but the skeeters were insane! It was waaaay too warm.

As I happily went out this morning, there was frost on my windshield, and I shivered while I was out!  ;D

p.s. still no venison for the ice.  :'(
