Night crawlers as live bait
« on: Feb 04, 2019, 04:47 PM »
Besides chub minnows, has anyone had any sort of success using Night crawlers as a Live bait for either pike or walleye? we use them on Worm harnesses all the time in summer on Lake Erie as a go to in most occasions. I figure They are cheap, they work well in summer, I was looking for your Input. Thank you one and all.

It's meat, it will catch pike. Not sure on walleye, they generally like motion.

I have good luck catching trout on crawlers, especially rainbows, haven’t targeted pike or walleyes with them.

Thanks, Im going to experiment with them this week on/in two locations. The one is known to have anything under the water and the other is infamous for walleye and musky. I just think hey, its moving, it has a scent, if they take a nip and like it they will prob eat it. Worth a shot, easy to transport, small investment.

Been seeing a lot about guys using hot dogs as bait. My buddy went as far as pinning the tail of a Bluegill at one end. He never had flag. I told him to throw on some mustard and onions next time.  ;)

I do well with night crawlers on trout.  Most fish eat worms.

Put them in a baggie and keep them in an inside pocket.  Perch and gills love crawlers.  One crawler lasts a long time.

As for eyes I would for go the crawlers.  Use the same bait as in cold water fall and spring.  Chubs or large minnows or minnow heads.  Would be a better choice.

I use European crawlers for trout, and panfish, they are much more cold tolerant than Canadian crawlers.

How about rigging? I’d use em more, but in lakes with bluegills and little perch they get picked to pieces

I’ve only ever caught trout when using worms under tipups or set lines. Good way to save on bait when targeting them though, since they often chew and strip baitfish but will just take the worm and eat it. I always use inline circle hooks though, I get them in the corner of the mouth at least 90% of the times.
