Title: Green Hornet
Post by: fd757 on Jan 18, 2010, 12:31 AM
The Green Hornet has caught more fish....  Any one have any patterns for the Green Hornet?  I have wanted to make one for a few years now, just don't know where to start.  If it catches fish like Goldman says it does, I need one in my arsenal.

The latest issue of "Fly Tyers" magazine has an article w/recipe & photos of the Green Hornet.  I'm at work now & will give you more details later today.  I got my mag at "Tops"

I drew up my own plans, cut it out of 3/4 pine, paint then clear coat. I added a reel too. Not completely accurate I know but it works good.
There are a million of them on e-bay too If you are looking to buy one.

It took numerous trys and a lot of digital grabs from the movie, including scaling up from the size of Max's hand, but this looks like as close as it comes.  And before anybody asks, I don't make them for anybody.  :)
I made 3, 1 for me, my daughter and one for my dad, but by the time I do all the work, it would cost a lot to build them.
I have used this to land a ton of Perch on Chautauqua.  My Dad loves his.  The rod tip on mine is wood, however on my daughter's and Dad's I did use fiberglass.   THey get a ton of comments everytime somebody sees them.  The ones on ebay look weird, and some have the line wrap on the bottom, not a real green hornet!
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I made a bunch of prototypes before I got ones I liked.  A bandsaw and time...and good poplar wood.
Mine and my dad's do have the correct white collar.  Details details details!

That thing is awesome! Well done. If you don't mind telling, is there something attached to the eye to guide the line? I can't quite tell from your pic.

Thanks

I wish I had the talent and the tools to be able to do that. I bought one off of ebay and it looks great. I bought it to hang in my shack. My luck would be the same and I would loose it down the hole.

RE: Guide
Just left of the pic is the first guide.  I have three guides to tip (end of an old casting rod).  Never had a problem with tangles.  Made one (looks like a Loon) out of Cherry, its a bit heavy.

silvercreeker, would consider tracing an outline of the green hornet and sending it out. My son and I watch that movie on the ice every year during our first outing and he would love one of these. Yours is the the best looking one i've seen! Thank-you!

My fishing buddy got one from an in-law for Christmas a few years ago. He takes it out with us, but has not used it yet! I think he is afraid of the awesome power of the Green Hornet! ;D
Title: Re: Green Hornet
Post by: silvercreeker on Jan 19, 2010, 05:07 PM
The wood rod tip is actually an old bamboo fly rod tip that was broke...
As for patterns, just print the picture and resize it to the ruler in the second pic, and there is a pattern.  Should work perfect.

I think I'll just order fiberglass blanks from Jann's or from Mud Hole.  Or, I have a few broken rods downstairs.  That would work.

I make and sell Green Hornets at Flea Markets, I also have a couple hanging in my Steakhouse. People love em' and I enjoy making them and seeing folks reactions. I buy old rods at auctions and garage sales and use the tips for the Hornets, I also try and use the old style thread fishing line that's multi colored to add to the nostalgic effect. I put them together in the shop and paint em up out at the cabin, start a fire and paint another batch of Green Hornets. Not a bad way to spend a winters evening ;D

One question...how do you mount the fiberglass into the handle to keep it from spinning or falling out?
Title: Re: Green Hornet
Post by: silvercreeker on Jan 20, 2010, 04:48 PM
The measurement in the bottom pic is 13 & 3/8" from beak to tail.
I mount the rods in the beak by drilling in 2 inches and then dipping the rod end in epoxy.  When dry, it will never come out.
Just remember, get good straigt grain wood.
Title: Re: Green Hornet
Post by: Madpuppy on Jan 21, 2010, 07:08 AM
I drill in like silver does and I glue my rod ends in with F-26 construction adhesive.

I thought it looked like 12 3/8.  Is this a typo or is it the camera angle?  I too had to get out the movie after reading this post.  I thought it looked like the eyes of the rod ran down the left side of the pole.  Did anyone else notice this?  It makes sense being the line comes off the left side of the spool.  There is a good shot of it when he goes into his shanty and he layes it down, be ready to pause and you'll get a good look at it. Is the body a dark red?  I may have to try making one also.  Thanks for sharing, Great Job!!!

Post by: Captain on Jan 21, 2010, 09:13 AM
I just made a full size pattern from the picture.  I printed the picture then took it to a copier, selected 11x17 paper and copied at 146%.  This came out very close if you compare a ruler to the one in the picture.
Title: Re: Green Hornet
Post by: bigmike7272 on Jan 21, 2010, 09:31 AM
i just printed, cut out, trace, go around again making it bigger, go around again making it bigger, then cut out. BOOM!! you got yourself a nice template.
Title: Re: Green Hornet
Post by: silvercreeker on Jan 21, 2010, 07:05 PM
The camera angle makes the measurement look shorter.  I rechecked the movie on bluray and 40 inch tv.  The eyelits are on top, the foot of the eyelits appear to wrap around and give the illusion that the eyelits are side mounts.

Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men are the absolute favorite moves of myself and my two buddies.  We watch them about every time we get together and we always still laugh at the same stuff.

About 5 or 6 years ago one of my buddies bought Green Hornets for the other two of us.  My buddies says 'Moron' on the handle and mine says 'Putz'  ;D  I believe he bought them off ebay.  They look great and really were the most thoughtful gift he has ever given us! (last year we got 'Billie Bass'... really ???)

Anyway, I love it.  I have fished with it and enjoyed it, but now it has a special place in my rec room, hanging below my 'Happy Campers Hideaway' sign.

I watch that movie every year on the ice, it just gets me into the mind set of the season. I have wanted a green hornet for years, after waiting for a friend to make one, I decided to do it myself.  I played the dvd on my my 60" and kept pausing it on the green hornet as I sketched my pattern.

Madpuppy , Would you mind sharing the size and type of wood you use? Im going to make a couple for my dad and I. I like the putz, moron names on them too !!  I downloaded and watched the movie today and maybe its just me but the green hornet appears longer then 12 or 13 inchs in the movie but it could just be me..  Just for fun the other day I made one out of 3/4'' plywood  just to see how close I came with a jigsaw, With some sanding it could be pretty good...  Would you suggest 3/4 or 1 inch  wood?
