solo flip up shelters
« on: Feb 16, 2010, 10:47 PM »
What I want to know is does a power auger and a small minnow bucket and rods/tip ups fit in one of these well? Do any of you owners have to modify, or have ideas or frustations with this.

I'd like to get one that I can store auger, minnow buckt and gear that fit securely and hassle free. Thanks.

I have 1 man Clam Scout and in it I carry my Buddy heater, my 8" IceGator auger, rod case, Aqua Vue camera and my Frabill minno-life aererated minnow container, small lunch bag and thermos and various other small things you may need. So yes you can carry just about all you need!

I "modded" my Otter Pro Ice Cottage 1-Man to hold my gear.  The goal was to add both organization and fishability, and since I'm pulling this house with a snowmobile as much as by hand, my major design parameter was to insure that my gear was really secure and that I could pull the Otter along at a good clip and not break anything.

I haul the auger on the back of the snowmobile, unless I'm pulling by hand, then I lay it across the travel cover and bungee it down.  That helps to keep any tent tears, and gas or oil mess in the Otter to a minimum.

I wanted a a dedicated and protected spot for a 11# propane tank, Buddy heater, minnow cooler, my Lowrance, and my fishing rods. The best advice I could give if you decide to do something like this is to lay out your gear in the sled and start playing around with cardboard templates before you start. My initial design was drawn on paper, but it changed a couple times after I actually started messing around with my gear in the sled.

My Otter Cottage pulls and fishes GREAT!

That is fantastic! What I was wondering is can you customize it to hold the auger? I guess you must put auger on top? This design is the best I have seen yet for the kind of fishing I will be doing. Nice.

Mostly wood.  Materials I used were 1/2” AC plywood, 3/4” X 1 1/8” pine (actual) and 1” X 1” X 1/8” T-6061 aluminum angle. My insert weighed 20 pounds before I installed the carpet.

If you are pulling by hand only, I think you could lighten this design using 1/4" premium underlayment (5 ply - 4' X 4' or 4' X 5' sheets) for the partitions and 1" X 1" X 1/16" aluminum angle.  You might be able to get by with premium 3/8" plywood for the deck lids too.

I just started working last night on another insert for a buddy using more aluminum.  Same basic concept, but the top of the frame where the deck lids rest will be aluminum angle welded together (I'm teaching myself how to weld aluminum...fun ;)) and the partitions are premium 3/8" plywood.

I've got some ideas for Version 3.0 too, we'll see how this current version works out.  ;D

Here's a pic of mine without the deck.  I added a "transom" (1/8" aluminum plate) after this pic was taken, because I pull a gear hauler sled behind me, and another Otter too- if somebody else is fishing with me.  We hitch them all together and go.

That is a really nice addition you made to the sled!  How long did it take you to do this?

Great Job....

The last couple I've done took less time because I have cardboard templates for all the pieces.  The first one took the longest, more time just to figure things out and come up with a workable design.  I've built 5 of these now, and they are very nice platforms to fish on.

Wow Jim that's awesome! ;D I cam work with metals but the wood part would slow me down. NPI. I think Aluminum angle is the ticket weight wise. I lost my job last march and
had all kinds of aluminum but I still have friends I can call to help me out. Keep the pics.
coming. Great Job! ;D

The aluminum poles along the back?  Those are the wind brace poles for the Otter house.  Really not needed in a house this small, but I do use the back pole occasionally just to prop up the lower frame of the house straight up in the air to use the tarp as a wind break.

Or do you mean the aluminum angle used to put the corners together in the main compartment?
