i was just wondering if any body uses a downrigger realese when using big bait that set off the flag alot. it would be easy to rig just clip the ball end around one of the tipup crossmembers.

do you use treble or single hooks? i was wondering if the pike felt the resistance of the realese if he mite spit the bait.

Try the red Offshore Tackle Snap Weight releases.  They work the best for me and I've tried quite a few different types.  They will hold some pretty big suckers, no problem.
I use either quick strike rigs or single circle hooks.  I like them both because they don't injure the fish in case I want to release them.

actually all i do with an overzealous bait is to clip his tail a little!it will not take away from the baits action at all he will swim all day but not have as much pull with less tail.it works great ;D
