GPS coordinate help
« on: Jun 03, 2015, 01:54 AM »
I have some gps coordinates I want to enter but I am not sure how to. The bottom of the map says it is measured in UTM. The numbers for the coordinates are 6 numbers then a decimal followed by another six numbers. I can't find anywhere what kind of coordinates these actually are. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I can't get it to convert. It has point X and point Y.  Here is one of the coordinates if it will help. Point X: 418551.934263     Point Y:4694468.12445.
My original post was 6 numbers decimal point 6 numbers but point y is actually 7 numbers decimal point 5 numbers.

Google UTM results:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Transverse_Mercator_coordinate_system

This system is not the traditional method of latitude and longitude but uses a grid system. You need more information to convert your UTM to something all GPS systems understand. This is a grid system and if you are looking for something in Iowa, the grid location is 15T.

There are some math calculations in the link above if your good at math. If it were me, I would chuck the map and get another map. Lake Master makes great paper maps.

Your GPS should have no trouble recognizing UTM coordinates if that's what your GPS is set for. My 2 Magellan's are switchable between either Latitude & Longitude or UTM coordinates. Check your users manual or visit the manufacturers website. I use UTM coordinates while geocaching, it's very accurate. These coordinates can easily be entered by hand into your GPS.

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/utm-latitude-longitude-d_1370.html This website will convert UTM to Latitude and Longitude. I've seen others too.
Search for Translate UTM into Latitude and LOngitude

I was able to convert it but its showing the opposite end of the lake. It also wouldn't allow me to put in the numbers after the decimal point. I haven't been able to figure out what these coordinates are for anything.

I am using UTM on the gps but I am unable to plug in all the numbers the map is showing.

Strange, something's not right. UTM #'s should be 15T(for your location), E or W, followed by 6 numbers, then N or S, followed by 7 numbers. Try rounding the numbers & see if that helps. For the example you gave: Point X: 418552, Point Y: 4694468.

PM me all of the coordinates and I will convert them for you when time allows...I'm assuming you're taking DNR waypoints and converting them for HB use? Its a pain when dealing the with the decimal coordinates but they can be converted in a multistep process online. Heck let me know what lake it is an I might already have them converted and in a gpx file :)

This will give you an idea of the format and conversion process http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_degrees and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easting_and_northing and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_coordinate_system
