Tube Jigs for Pike?
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 11:25 PM »
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if any of you has ever tried tube jigs while ice fishing for pike? I know they work great for lake trout and don't see why they should not work on pike also. I have few tube jigs and I inserted a rattle in the head of one, has anyone tried this before? How do they compair to a bucktail jig in effectiveness on pike? ???
Thanks for your time, and good luck fishing.

I'm sure that pike would like them. I would fish about a 3.5 inch tube in white or chartreuse with a piece of cutbait on it. I'm sure they would hit them if you could find some hungry ones.

I've heard about them for pike and muskie in open water, give it a try on the hard H2O ;)

Hi guys,
Am also going to try them next time I am out for pike which will hopefully be sometime this weekend. I have the mister twister Exude tubes in white with black and silver fleck, they have there own sent, would you still want to add a wee bit of cut bait on it for extra sent? Good Luck

i would still add a bit of cutbait, as i havent really had the predator fish respond to exude like they do other scented baits (berkley power tubes, power worms, ect)

I fish with bare tubes for pike, usually a 3.5" w/ a 1/8 oz. ballhead inside.  White or pumkinseed seem to be the best colors, but I have caught fish on almost all colors.  A bit of bait could be helpful, but since I don't ever use cutbait I wouldn't know.  It's tough to keep a minnow hooked on very long though, erratic jigging seems to really work.

I'll second the pumpkin seed color choice. I've caught alot of pike, fishing for trout in open water, with the 3.5in. pumpkin seed, no bait. Bait is not allowed on the lake I've used this at. Good Luck!

Sounds good, if that fails, I've heard of good success with Rattle Traps... ;)

Rattle traps eh pasquatch? Do they tip those?

As for tube jigs for pike...I find I can't keep pike off of small lures for perch, but I'll be da**ed if I can get pike to hit a lure meant for pike!
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

TroutFishingBear- You must loose a few perch lures to those toothy critters eh?,lol, what little perch lure do you catch them on, I always up for trying a new technique, if both pike and perch like it that's good. I will also try the rattle bait you suggested Pasquatch, I have a Berkley Frenzy rattle lure, and it work well in open water. Do you jig it a aggressively or slower? :D

Thanks Pasquatch, I will give the rattle lure a try, at the very least it should bring in curious pike that may hit the set lines.  ;)

Custom jigs and spins ratsos and shrimpos. I used them for perch and landed a few pike on them, and had many more bite off and break my 2 lb. mono. I would catch about 1 a trip on a shrimpo and snap off maybe 4. but I was fishing for perch. I just used the small #6 and tipped it with a waxworm...lol the pike liked it.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.
