Counts as one hook.  I use some small ones on
jigs but I usually release pike and a treble would
more than likely do much greater damage to the
fish than a single hook.  Besides, I can just see
me trying to dig a big nasty treble out of my thumb :-[

thanks for the tips.   I would rather release the pike unless its a Pin, so I'll stick to my single Eagles

I use a big circle hook on a short wire leader for pike- works great and always hooks them right in the corner of the mouth.

Quick Strike rigs work the BEST.  Increase your chances of landing a fish and reduce the chance of gut hooking a pike.  Just my 0.02

this past weekend i switched from treble hooks to circle and j hooks and my landing percentage went up. i'm pretty sure trout and salmon don't like to feel them so they spit the bait. there's times that i'm glad i used treble hooks for a good hook. doesn't hurt to experiment sometimes.

A hook is described to catch only one fish at a time therefore a treble hook is legal. Pretty hard to hook two fish on one treble. But like everyone else says circle hooks are the way to go all I use now :)

Try using a Quick Strike Rig, I make them with two #8-10 treble hooks.  They are legal in Mass., work great, and I have always hooked the pike in the mouth.  I have gotten heat about the two trebles and not being a "Real" pike guy, but I don't kill the shiner or use dead bait, the shiner is alive and moving.  The idea of "Go Steal, Or Start Crying", is right, I can cut 80 lb. Fluorocarbon with nail clippers, so what can a pike do to it?  I'm not tiring to start a fight, I just think folks should give this a try, or watch the video from In-Fisherman on how to make them and fish them.
There still is plenty of ice west of conn. river.  Don't give up and good luck to all.

You can use anything, as long as it is designed to catch one fish.

I've caught trout on little trebles jigging, but never on a tip-up.  Singles on tip-ups I've caught trout, though.

I like to use treble hooks, I very rarely lose fish. My buds that use singles sometimes tend to lose there fish more often(the big one allways get away haha), and it's not like they are bad fisherman. I have had good luck this year with icefishing (lots of time being laid off). All the fish I caught, very rarely have swallowed the hook to the point that it would hurt the fish, and I would definitely switch to singles if it did! I'm all about catch and release!  Hooks are all personal preference! Lots of people will argue differently, but I stand by trebles.

I haven't noticed much difference in swallowing the hook between the trebles and the singles.  When they do swallow them, it's way easier to get it out if it's not a treble, though.  If I know I'm going to keep what I catch, I'll go for trebles.

I couldn't agree more about the quick strike rigs. I use them when I am using big dead bait. Set the hook quickly and the fish is never hooked deep. Yes I have also seen that video.

BamBam caught a pickle on Wyola today, and it had a treble in its lip as jewelry.  Removed it, then released it, sans piercing.  Cause was a bad knot.
