Where is a good place to trap shinners in western mass? What areas should I put my traps near?

Trying to find shiners in winter will lead to needing new auger blades.

There's close to a bazillion posts about where and how to trap bait on the site, get comfortable and read up on it before you start, and be ready to put in a lot of time looking for spots and even more time trying spots that don't produce at all.

I've also been thinking of trapping my own shiners.  Would you recommend streams or ponds?

Catch em while you can as the powers to be in the statehouse are proposing a ban on the taking of bait by its citizens.  Only in Taxachusetts!

They're mostly just changing the commercial regulations on bait and removing emeralds and some other kind of shiner. Goldies will be fine and completely legal if you trap your own and don't plan on selling them.

I have a small hand dug pond in my back yard (100ft X 130ft) and about 6 feet deep that was dug back in the 40's for cattle. It's literally 100 yards out my back door. Once I removed all the snapping turtles, I'm growing my own pondies. A few years ago I bought 100 pounds of breeders and dumped em in, been feeding them Purina Game Fish Chow.
I figure by next season I'll have some golden's about 12-14 inches long the way they are growing!
