« on: Jan 24, 2009, 06:06 AM »
Been trapping doing well until someone found my spot and my traps. They now think that my traps and bait is free to the taking. What do you think about scumbags like this?I just cant believe the nerve of some people. They are lucky I havent caught them yet.

I would put a trail camera on the trail to the traps and find out who it is,then deal with it.BB

Catching big fish is like winning the door prize!
Have to be there to win!!!!

Probably they will not be back unless they are real stupid........when ya put the camera in, put a rope in the water, at the end attach a metal sign sayin "gotch ya A$$hole" and round up a few guys, I'll help, and we can lets say "go get your shiners back" nothin lower than that my friend.

you can buy a trail motion camera fairly cheap at dicks and catch these scumbags.
this will tell you the time they're showing up and catch them in the act.. Then the beatings begin. good luck

Sounds like they left your traps? Count your self lucky on that. Traps with name tags are to be left alone. Trail Camera get the photo's And post the Photo in all the local bait shops post office gas stations pizza hut ect.... Let the world know what kind of scum they are. ;D Good Luck!!!

Hey if it's not deep where your getting them, sink your trap without a rope attached.  I made a pole with a hook on it to retrieve my trap from the bottom. Just makes it harder for thieves to get.

I used to trap crayfish out of a private golf course pond (I wasn't a member  ;D), Once I caught the mexican greens keeper guy pulling it out and I yelled at him and told him to put it back, He was pretty scared. I told him I lived in the condos on the lake. (I was 15 at the time :P)

i lost my trap last year. i found out who did it the same day by talking to their father. saw them this winter and told them to keep it, but that one sucked, just swam right in and out. i'm still looking for one like my first, the one that got washed away in a two day flood (rain heavey storm). i've had a couple jacked on me, wasn't p.o.ed about the last one cuz it su_cked. b glad they left the traps

Same idea as mentioned before. During the open water season I will take usally some small black dacron (200lb test line backing for tuna) ,Make this about ten feet or so then tie two traps on either end. In the middle i will drill a cork from a bottle and also paint that black. Then tie a knot so the cork stays in the middle. Everything on this set up is black so where i fish (in the mud) its hard to see the traps. i have a 15 foot gaff that I use to retrieve the traps with. The cork helps locate the line a little better. This makes it hard for people to get into your stuff. Also you could put a longer line with some droppers if you wanted to fish more traps on one line.

I wouldn't mind it so bad if they were taking the minnows and leaving the trap which I'd still talk to them about but when they take the trap thats when I'd stomp them down.  Had a trap stolen for a week last summer then it showed back up by the bridge.  I think they found the name tag on it later and thought it best to return it.

If you know who it is, take their traps and stomp on them then find out were they live and throw them on their front porch.Agressive behavior works well..

Then there's always the "guerilla tactic" method.
It's nasty, but will definitely teach whoever bothers your trap a lesson.
Replace the trap with an equally weighted brick/stone, attached with cheap rope(hopefully similar to what you use on your own traps) and stick hooks through the rope so that when the start hauling the rope through their hands, they get a nice surprise!  :-\

I don't trap my own shiners, but if I did, and someone was screwing with my gear, I'd definitely want to put an end to it, PERIOD!

Hopefully you will have no further issues with this matter.

I think there is know lower form of life than an outdoorsman stealing from another outdoorsman  >:(. I feel the same way everytime I get a tree stand stolen. If I ever ran into some one f%#king with my gear it wouldn't be pretty. >:( :(
